I drive like an old man... oh wait, I am an old man - i forgot. I drive like the gas pedal is an egg, like gas is $3 a gallon, and like brakes cost money. oh wait, all that is true too. well maybe not the egg part.
Driving on hwy about 55, and taking into account the 10% speedo error due to bigger tires, I get 17 mpg.
Get on interstate and speed up to 65-75, mileage drops to 15-16.
Driving to work, about 45, stop and start, I get 14-15.
Stay in city, stop/go, stop/go/stop, stop, go, AC on, I get 13-14.

I bought my truck new in `98 and got 11.5 mpg from the start. No matter what I did - drove it hard - babied it - highway - city, didn't matter ... 11.5 mpg. So I just gave up and drove it like I stole it. Interestingly enough, three or for months ago, overnight, I started getting 12.5 mpg (I've got just over 85k on the thing). The only thing that changed was they started putting 10% alcohol in the gas here in Ft. Worth. They claimed that mileage would go DOWN ... mine went UP ... consistantly. My truck loves it.

It appears to have been taken off line because of age
but back in the 1997-1999 period
Popular Mechanics had a weblink
to 2,000,000 mile 'owner's reports' on both the
Ram Pickup and the Dodge Durango.

Both big surveys showed the
'all around' MPG to be about 12
with the 5.9V8 approximately 0.75 MPG worse than the 5.2

Even though the 5.7 V8 is said to be 8% more efficient than the Magnum 5.9V8
even the modern 2002-2006 Rams also seem to be in
the 12 MPG range
because they are less aerodynamic than the earlier 1994-2001 Rams,
and also perhaps because the internal design of the three 'simple' planetaries in the 45/545 automatic trans may create more driveline loss than the old
"Simpson paired planetaries followed by an overdrive unit"
that was in the 727/518/46 series of automatics.

You can see evidence of this in these two long term tests:

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...fications.html

http://www.caranddriver.com/article....rticle_id=6695

With modest changes in driving habits
and some inexpensive modifications
(ones that can pay for themselves)
it probably is possible for
5.2 V8 Ram pickups to get into the 16-17 MPG 'overall' range
by picking and choosing from the 20-30 suggestions in
this very long article:

https://dodgeforum.com/m_447500/tm.htm

If you were to buy a 1994-2001 5.2 Ram for the present
used prices of $3000-6000
and spend around $8000 to $18,000 to modify it
you could have a Ram pickup that would
out accelerate a 2003-2006 5.7 Hemi Ram
and still get 17 MPG city and perhaps 26 MPG highway at a steady 60 mph.

I have the same truck and I get about 15 MPG. I'd probably get better is my tires weren't 265's. I believe that my Flowmaster has really helped me out a lot.

2001 QC Off Road 5.2 w/ 285's and I get around 10-11 city and about 13 highway. My buddy's 2001 QC 5.9 w/ 265's averages about 1 mpg better under all circumstances.

i get 10-12 MPG no matter how i drive. be it slow and steady or like a mad man on a high speed police chase , in the end its always between 10-12MPG the ONLY exception i found is if u drive at one speed (75mph) for over 60 miles non stop with windows up a/c on i did if my math was right got an amazing 16 MPG. i stiill have problems believing that but i really could care less due to the fact i only in 136,000 miles was able to drive 75 all the time constant for more than 60 miles twice in those 136,000 miles. just face 12 good, i know as long as im getting 12 mpg and can beat the crap out of the truck i drive police chase style ever day, hey if im gettin 12 no matter what why not have fun stopping at everyever gas station and dropping in 20 bucks worth. i refuse to pay more than 20 dollars that i never see. as far as im concerned i want to just tape over the gas gauge cause all it does is **** me off and its never read past1/4 tank scince gas jumped to 3.46 for 93 (i have the mopar performance computer) i seriousily burned the low fuel light out. and scince im poor and cheap im going have to fix it cause that really was my fuel gauge. i knew when the light came on which never took long i knew i had 40-50 more miles before i started cuttin it close. one question and ill end my rambling i have a 95 1500 2wd extended cab short bed i think 119" wheelbase. what the hell size fuel tank do i have a 26 or the like 36 gallon tank which id need a bank loan to fill. the tank seemed huge as hell when i did the fuel pump but the window sticker says its 26 i cant seem to find out the truth. i guess i could fill it scince its always almost empty and see how much fits but they dodnt do financing on gas yet do they!!!! oh and my truck is a 95 with 99 360 engine
