Default Truck dies but no codes found

My 97 Ram 1500 5.9 keeps dying. I hooked up a snap-on scanner but it shows "no codes present ok to drive" It is an intermittant problem and am usually able to nurse it home. Someone told me a fuel pump could do that but I want to be sure before I am out 300 bucks. Any thoughts?

I agree...check your fuel pressure first!

If I remember right, it should be around 49psi +/- 5 at the injectors during normal operation.

I thought operating PSI was more like 19-22 psi. The stock injectors are 19 lbs, with a variant of +/- 4.

According to the service manual it's 49 [&:]

(5) Start engine and bring to normal operating
temperature.
(6) Observe test gauge. Normal operating pressure
should be 339 kPa +/–34 kPa (49.2 psi +/–5 psi).
(7) Shut engine off.
(8) Pressure should not fall below 30 psi for five
minutes.
(9) If pressure falls below 30 psi, it must be determined
if a fuel injector, the check valve within the
fuel pump module, or a fuel tube/line is leaking.
(10) Again, start engine and bring to normal operating
temperature.
(11) Shut engine off.
SPECIFICATIONS - FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE -
GAS ENGINES
All Gasoline Powered Engines: 339 kPa +/- 34
kPa (49.2 psi +/- 5 psi)

19 pounds is the weight of fuel the injector will flow in one hour and not the operating pressure.

Fixed it, done. The fuel pressure was 50psi...most of the time. I hooked the guage up and drove it around until it died again. Right before it died the pressure bled off to about 10psi. Turns out the pressure regulator was being eratic. Put in a fuel pump module which includes the filter and regulator and now she's fine. Bought a Carter brand pump from NAPA for $294.00. Looks like a much better pump than stock. Instead of having a small pick-up screen it has a very large pre-filter.
