Hypertech ppIII vs. K&N Intake?
ok which one should i get? and explain why. if you know the specs on what i will get out of them then please share. i already have a drop in k&n filter. i would love it to get up and go more, since i put on the 33". HELP!!!!!!
Don't you have another thread about this already? [&:]
You can't really say what gains anyone will get, as every motor is different and will respond differently. Same goes for every truck. Your truck and the way it's setup may be completely different from someone else that's put on a programmer or intake.
The programmer has a few different levels as well. It has a mid grade level (where you have to run mid grade fuel) and a premium setting (where you have to run PREMIUM fuel). You will see the most performance out of the premium level, but it will cost you more to fill up.
If the cost of gas is a concern for you, then I'd go with the intake instead...or a throttle body from www.thefastman.com

IMO you will get more for your money with the hypertech, not only because you can adjust your power and torque but you can also program it for your tire size and read diagnostic codes with it. if you had other mods such as a full exhaust set up and a throttle body like burning rom suggested you would find the k & n more useful than without any other mods like that
well i have a flowmaster 40 series dual out muffler dumped off in front of the rear tires. but i guess that not a full blown new exhaust now is it... i think ima get the programmer cuz i want more power and torque out of her. i think that is......thanks for all the help ill let ya know what i decide.
If you look at the dyno numbers provided by the manufacturers you will get bigger gains from the programmer. The intakes dont give you much gain until the high end anyway. Hank has some good posts on aftermarket intakes. The programmer is the only mod I have done so far that I actually noticed an improvement from. Is it a $400 improvement? No, I don't think so, but I bought mine used for half that so I think it was definitely worth it. I believe some truck magazine did a recent comparison of intakes and the best was the K and N. It yielded an average gain of 4 HP. That's not a lot considering how much they cost. The Hypertech will give you more and on the 318 the HP and torque increases are almost the same on the low octane setting as the high octane program. I would get the Hypertech.
ok, heres what i did...i just got the K&N filter to replace in the stock box. Dodges have surprisingly large intake box, and the tube cant really be beat. The ribs could be gotten rid of, but thats about it. it already gets air from the wheel well, which is cold, so just get the higher performance air filter for ~$50, then you will have enough for the programmer as well. this will be the best gain for the bucks. i did this and with the 2, i got an extra 28 HP at the wheels. Having an exhaust does no good if you cant get the air in. THe K&N flows over 70% more air than a paper filter, adn is good for 1 million miles. the aftermarket "cold air" intakes, acutally dont help liek they do with other trucks. since they keep the intake part still in the engine bay = hot air. anyway, go the way i went, and will be happy. if you have any questions, or comments, just PM me.
