alright know-it-all what would you recommend for the rear of a half ton??

For off-roading (NO towing), a detroit locker. They don't have the best road manners though.

so i've noticed in mud that if you cut the wheel in 4wd and start spinning i can feel/hear the front end switching from right to left.. beats the hell out of the truck doing that.. i went to do a 4wd donut in the mud and i couldnt the front end kept jerking around... is that the limited slip your talking about??

if you cut the wheel tightly in 4 wheel drive and hit the gas hard, there is a very good chance you are going to destroy a u-joint. the jerking around you feel when doind such is due to the fact theat there is no differential action between the front and rear. with a tight turn, the front has to turn faster than the rear. since the transfer case does not allow that, the tire actually 'scrubs', or loses contact with the ground for a second to keep the equality front and rear

well i know my 4x4, axles, differentals are all fine.. so it must be the open differential doing it.. my old truck was a 93 blazer.. 3 inch body lift 2 inch sus. lift with 33 inch mudkings.. and i could do cyclones in the mud in that thing and not have a problem.. i tried it in this truck and the front end kept jerking around/clunking.. like it was switching from left to right trying to get some traction.. so im guessing its the open differential..

So even if you cut the wheel and spin like crazy in the mud, it shouldn't jerk or shudder....at least not because of the fact that the driveshafts are locked together. It may jerk and shudder for other reasons, but not because of the difference in speed between the front and the back axles.

in the dirt, with the wheel cranked all the way to one side, and applying gas, you will get an interesting sensation through the steering wheel. assuming you are hard on the gas and moving at a decent speed, you will get a pulsing, yanking-back-and-forth feel in the steering wheel. this is because the u-joint actually binds mildly, causing it to pull to a side (and since the u-joint on each side does it, thats where you get the pulsing feeling). this is also a good way to grenade a u-joint, as it puts alot of stress on it. when in 4 wheel drive (especially with large tires on) you should not apply heavy throttle during tight turns.

I have a detroit tru trac and am pleased with it. I tow some and it has done well so far. http://www.drivetrainspecialists.com/

the drivetrain will hold up fine to a locker. neven with 38's you still might be ok. alot of times a locker is better for trucks with bigger tires. my friends ram was running 35's and an open diff and he exploded his spyder gear because there was too much stress on it. also as for street driving with a detroit. im doing it and honesty after the first 3 days i totally forgot it was back there. theres just a few things you need to remember like letting off the gas around corners. and slow down alot around corners in the rain. it will like to fishtail really easy with a locker but its nothing to worry about if you drive smart. the only other thing is snow and its the same way, drive smart and you'll be fine.

i had a 99 dodge durango 4x4 with the 360, and I had full time possi trac in the back not one did i ever have just one tire spin never and even in 4x4 the front two tire did not switch back and forth the all for spun all the time but it took an acher to turn it around too in 4x4 lol. But I got it used so i dunno if they had anything done to it or not.
