I am looking for new prebent ready to install metal brake lines that run along the drivers side frame rail to the rear of the truck.

the truck is a 1997 ram sport 1500 4x4 std cab. the brake line had just started to leak last weekend so i first thought it must be from the ruber hose, so I bought a new one and while I was under the truck today going to change the hose that is when I realised that in fact the leak was comming from the metal line a little further up the frame, as I investigated more I found that almost the entire line was rusty, frame was rust free, I thought this sure is strange.

where can I find a new brake line? or am I gona havta make my own from a roll of tube?

 

I made my own and it wasn't too bad. http://www.classictrucks.com/tech/05...e_line_basics/ offers some help in doing the job right. Experiment with some bending to see where the bend radius winds up. After a few, your a pro.

 

I had to replace mine a year or so back. Same issue, except mine went all at once. I measured the lenght of the line and bought two sections with the ends already on it at local auto parts to get the length with a coupling under the door area. Put the long section to the back so the coupling was visible and accessable if needed. Layed the old one on the ground and matched the bends. Took a little time, but not bad. Had a little extra at the front and made a couple of extra bends to fit.

Just repaired the front passenger side line two weeks ago. It sprung a leak in the line just above the block where it changes over to the hose. Bought a 12" piece with the ends already on it, coupling, and cut and flared the old line back where it came up around the frame.

I have not looked at the other brake lines on the truck just yet. but from your post above sounds like I should just get a 25ft roll of tubeing and go ahead and replace them all.

what size of line is it ?

 

I bought the straight lines with the flares and fittings already on them and bent as needed. The dealer said they use roll tubing when they do them. The ones I did were 3/16".

 

I also have the same problem on my '99 2500 4x4. I also have a friend that has this problem on his '96 1500.

Please report this problem to the NHTSA at the link below. If enough people file a complaint they will force Dodge to issue a recall and Dodge will fix the problem and reimburse other owners for the repairs and hopefully learn the the few extra buck for Stainless Steel lines is worth it. They wanted to recall my hood latch for corrosion so they should recall the brake lines.

From what I have seen with people having problems with the metal lines leaking at the frame under the bed is they are rubbing against the gas tank and over time it wears a hole in them. When you run you new lines get some rubber hose that the metal tubing with slip into and run it thought it so that it will keep the metal from rubbing up against anything.
