Default Starting my Dodge

I am having a hard time starting my Ram. I cannot just start it up in neutral. I have to move the shift lever up and down until I find the sweet spot. i dont know if I need to be looking at the steering column or at the transmission for a fix. Any help is greatly appreciated.

What year. Sounds like the linkage is loose. If it was off to one side or the other, I would say adjust to the opposite. If it is not consistant in where it needs to be, something is loose. Follow the rod where it leaves the steering column below the master cylinder to the trans. Should find something loose/worn from there to the trans.
