RE: Roof and Hood Chipping
unfortunately it looks like you are going to be stuck re-painting the entire truck if its all starting to do that, theres no way to realy save it at that point. you are better off re-painting the whole truck as well, instead of just piece by piece. color matching would be the biggest issue there. my sugestion would be an el-cheapo mako job, just to get it looking good, and have it re-done right when the money is there.
just do you're research and find one of the better mako's in your area, because even with mako, quality differs greatly.

RE: Roof and Hood Chipping
my black 99 sport just started peeling the roof, and the hood has a few bad spots. Any good shop can, and will, just paint the horizontal surfaces, and blend it into the decent paint on the sides of the truck. Mine is getting done this week, although I do have a friend, so he's just doing it for materials, and a big discount on labor. Anyway, I think its about a 2K job normally.

RE: Roof and Hood Chipping
This past january my 01`s roof was doing the same. Now my hood is doing it in a few little spots and if you look at the color if some areas are nice and shiny and others look flat thats a tall tale sign your paint is on its way out.I just got a quote from my local dodge dealership to do the hood and a aluminum gas door over(long story there) for 450.00 but i decided to redo the 2 fenders since it is going to happen the same way.I take care of my truck and wax it and it isnt enough and its black....Guess chrysler didnt take into effect the outcome of what will happen to the paint after about 5-10 years...
thanks
pat
p.s. go to a dealership and check out their prices and shop around at some body shops. The bad thing is your truck is red and red isnt a cheap color and red and black are among some of the worst colors. Why you ask? Well red is cause of the pigment in the color and black absorbs heat like no other...

WellI decided.. for now. Just to paint the roof myself. Normally I wouldn't do this because I know very little about paint, but I figured what could possibile go wrong. It is the roof where very liitle people will see it if any all all. I went out and bought all the material. 2 cans of Flame Red Paint, 1 Can or Primer, 2 cans of clear coat, a sanding block and sheets of sandpaper ranging from 400 to 2000.
The worse, I figure, that can happen is I don't like how it turned out or if doesn't work. Then I can take it down to a body shop and they can paint it for $1500.00. Which then it would have cost me $1520.00 ($20.00 for all the self paint material I just bought). Either way I'll learn something about paint and my truck.
I'll take pictures as I progress on my endevor. and post them when I am done. I'm hoping to sand and paint it this weekend when I am vacationing in the mountains (lesws pollutants and dust since I don't have access to any clean room).
Thanks for everyones information/opinion/thoughts on this matter.

Just to add my 2 cents. My 97 did the same thing on the hood and the roof. What I did was take it to earl scheib, yes earl scheib!!! I had heard so many bad stories about them but I really had no other choice. I had it done in Phoenix, which is a 2.5 hour drive for me but let me tell you they did a great job, and I think that my truck looks really good now, and it was only 750.00, compare dto the 4 grand that the local shop told me and by the way the local shop said they would not give me any type of guarantee because of the spray in bedliner. Earl sheib gave me a 6 year warranty, I do have a little over spary here and there, but nothing that stands out or that will catch your eye , but for 750 it was well worth it. Again just my 2 cents.
