2001 Ram Automatic Transmission problem
Have 2001 1500 Ram 4x4 with four-speed overdrive automatic transmission. When accelerating at 25-30 mph, the transmission wants to shift back into 1st gear, rather staying in 2nd. This can run the tach up to 4000 rpm. Once past 30 mph, shifting is ok. Any suggestions?
welcome to DF... take it to a tranny shop, there are 2 sensors IIRC that can cause erratic shifting, let them check it out for you. when I fixed mine it was something like $300 bux which included a tranny service.
one was the govener pressure sensor????? I think is one of them, I tried looking at the shop manual for the other one and had no luck. I gave all of the paperwork to the guy who bought it so I cant go back to look for it.
I would call a tranny shop, act dumb and tell them about the 2 sensors being a common failure, get the names of them and then go to your shop. sneeky but gets you the info. these are a common failure part. you need to remove the valve body to get at both of them.

I know the governor pressure sensor is accessible w/o removing the valve body, and If you have to remove the governor itself you can do this also w/o removing the body. I was just looking at both last week when I did my adjustment, i was curious about the other sensor, play dumb, I got ya. My truck did the high RPM thing again, Dan the fastman told me to replace the GPS but I was stubborn.......lol................thanks
Its located to the left of the rear band adjuster on the 46RE tranny

well, then maybe that's not the one... my tranny guy who i've know for about 5 years mentioned that you had to yank the valve body to get to the parts he replaced.
mine was shifting funny, it would want to downshift at odd times, or upshift late. he mentioned that one of the 2 sensors (or maybe it was a solenoid??) usually causes this type of failure and since the VB had to be dropped he recommended swapping both. the parts were pretty cheep at under $100 bux for both.

I like the play dumb approach, but ya know when you drop that pan on the tranny, intimidation sets in.....lol. Don't know If I wanna try dropping my valve body, uncharted territory for me.
FYI-I priced the GPS @ dealer $112.00, autoparts stores don't carry it at least not in Ohio
The only other sensor I could find inside was the Overdrive sensor which is located on the backside of the valve body
