1st truck....need help
personally i think the hard covers are better as you can LOCK them. most of the "soft" covers you can lock in place but don't lock the tailgate so security is not there.
Just get a locking tailgate insert like the ones from Bully or Pop&Lock. I put one of the Bully ones on my tailgate when I installed my tonneau. Works great.

About bed covers. I've got a soft cover on mine but it's a 6' box. Don't recall ever having seen one on an 8 footer.
