Default Surging 360

Ive got a 98 QC Ram w/ 103,xxx on it and within the past month it has been surging. It is most noticeable on the highway, usually after 40mph+ it will rev up and down fluctuating 200rpm's. After 40mph it feels pretty doggy, and most times wont do anything if you floor it. Ive had it at the local shop a couple times and they have narrowed a few things down each time its been there. Transmission is fine, they tried several parts (not sure which) but wasnt the issue, Tried a computer out of a same yr ram and still had the surging. Im bringing the truck back in the shop this thursday and they think its most likely electrical, like a faulty wire. It doesnt seem to do this everytime im on the highway but is def noticeable when it does. If anyone has had this similar experience, Id like to know what was the cause. Thanks!

hey, go to autozone and pick up a Throttle position sensor, you can put it on your self, that should do it, but try that first before you take it into the shop, also if you dont have one pick up a haynes maual at autozone to, it helps alot. hopefully this will solve it.

Sounds like a bad Throttle Possioning Sensor. It the sensor on the drivers side of your throttle body and If I remember right it is about $25 at any local parts store. It's real easy to fix just unplug the wiring harnes and remove the 2 torx screws holding it in and put the new one in. Nothing to it.

The TPS was one of the first things they checked and I believe they tried interchanging it with a known good one and still had the same issue.

Loss of power (the truck being doggy) in the higher RPMs is often a sign of a bad catalytic converter, but then it would be doing it everytime you're on the highway.

have the shop check your TC lockup solenoid, it may be going bad causing this problem. your TC is supposed to unlock and downshift when under 2000 rpms when you have enough throttle. take it out on the road and try it, you should see the rpms jump 200~300 rpms right before it downshifts. if it's not consistant, your lockup solenoid may be bad.

Hey JTeg360 ...

I JUST went through part of this issue with my '99 Ram 1500 (360 Auto) ...

Here is the deal for me:

It was the Throttle Positioning Sensor.
I did not know about it until I came to this (most excellent ) board.
I had already taken my truck to the Dealer.
I repeat: it was the Throttle Positioning Sensor.

Ok, so I could bump my old thread, but here is a synopsis. When I went to the Dealer the first time, I was uneducated. I believe now they were trying to take advantage of my ignorance. They had the truck for two days, and did some work on it, which was fine, however the truck still surged after I got it back. Well that is when I educated myself via the guys here.

I called the dealer back, made an appointment, and talk directly to the tech (they are no longer mechanics now-adays [:'(] ) and basically told him I wanted a new TPS (Throttle Positioning Sensor). I had marked the existing TPS with a dab of silver paint.

When I got my truck back, it had a new TPS (free of charge this time ) <<<PRESTO>>> no surge.

SO I suggest you replace it your self... It is easy.. I have since had the Throttle Body off, cleaned it (and the Air Idle Control Motor) and done some other stuff ...

There is a thread in this formum that will direct you to a complete PDF file of a 2001 RAM Service manual... Even though it is a different year, so far everything in it had matched up with my 99 model...

Good luck, and DEATH TO THE EVIL DEALERS!!! [:@] ... I am sure there are good dealers out there, I just picked the wrong one!

EDIT: You know, to be fair, the Dealer DID replce the TPS for free the second go-round, so I should be a bit less bitter ... And I am ... I just got the feeling they wanted to keep me coming back... But then I beleive the Grassy Knoll theory too ... [&:]

Not that bad, the TC L/U solenoid is in the valve body.
Usually, the L/U solenoid isn't the problem, but corrosion on the pins in the plug.
