Default ticking sound coming from front driver side wheel well

Hello All,

I have done a search on this and can't drill down to a solution for a
"ticking sound coming from front driver side wheel well". It happens when I
turn left, right and backup. I have heard it tick when the truck is sitting
still.....very strange

I have a 98 2x4 RAM 1500, with a 3 inch Fabtech suspension lift (A-Arm)

I have swapped tires (brought the rear to the front and front to the rear)
and it still does it. I have attempted to recreate the problem by jacking up
the front end, turning the wheel and spinning the tire. Can't get it to make
the ticking sound.

I have replaced the driver side Wheel bearings and races.......Also,
replaced the front end (Idler ARM, Pitman arm...etc)

Has anyone run into this type of issue and what was the problem? I am
thinking it could be load related (does it under load)....

Suggestions:
Shocks?
Steering unit?
Motor mounts?
Tighten Upper and Lower Arm bushing bolts
Ball Joints

Thanks in advance,

Ken

If you hear that sound while its sitting still then it has nothing to do with suspension or driveline. Could be your belt making noise or a bad pulley bearing on sometihing.

If that sound is only during movement... then check the following, hub bearing, ball joints, something stuck between the dust sheild and the rotor(Have had that happen espically if you do a lot off mud/water crossings) I would be able to narrow it down if it was a 4x4 but I'm not a 2x4 suspenion guru sorry. But try those things out and see what happens.

MIke.

Hey Mike,

thanks for the feedback.........

sorry, need to clarify - as far as the noise while "just sitting there", the truck is off... (i know I'm not going crazy here, My wife has heard it also)...lol.
After i have backed into the driveway, and stopped, the truck will settle and make the noise...(maybe hear one click and that's it). when turning or backing up, it just ticks away as the wheels turn....
That's why i tend to believe it has something to do with the shocks or ball joints under load??

I have pulled the wheel and rotor off and the dust shield is clear of any items/debris......

so, the thing to consider would be the ball joints?

Thanks again,

Ken

If it does it while sitting still, check the shift linkage. It's right behind the drivers side wheel and I had the same problem. I have a 2wd 01 with fabtech 3 inch too. Somtimes the gromets go bad and the linkage comes loose and vibrates. At idle and under load. It feels like a knocking under your feet close to the drivers side wheel. At least it did for me. Took me forever to figure it out.

A real cheap fix if that's what it is, like 1 dollar or 2 from the dealer.

I guess you beat me to the post by 2 seconds. forget about what I said, lol.

If it is the ball joints, I would think the upper ones wear a little faster because of the lift. The fabtech arms my kit came with use a chevy ball joint. TRW 104100. Which is good to know because Fabtech might charge more for something you could pick up at Napa.

Let us know what is it when you figure it out.

Mine clicks too after I turn it off and get out. I don't think its anything major, just the engine cooling down. Doesn't bother me to much
