REMEDY FOR: Wet carpet/pass side leak
OK, On my way back from the HardRock Casino in Tampa yesterday, My girl (who was allready mad @ me for losing $1200.00 playing slots) noticed that the pass.side carpet was wet.
This is a 1997 Ram 1500 Quad Cab/ 5.9 ltr/auto 4x4
So, When I arrived home, I first did the SMELL test. NO, its NOT Anti-Freeze. Its FRESH water coming from SOMEWHERE.
So, I came into Dodge Forums looking for a quick fix. I found threads talking about possible Door seals / window seals / Windshield seals/ Third Brake light Seals, and a few others. But no one seemed to have a definitive answer, and I found NO POSTS about what I Found to be MY PROBLEM, so here it is for ALL to check on their truck.
PROBLEM: Wet Carpet on Pass. side. FRESH WATER, Not Anti-freeze - POOLING on Passenger side FRONT Carpet.
REMEDY: Pull back your carpet on the pass. side and DRY the firewall and all obvious moisture so you can see NEW WATER after you do the following:
Lift your hood. On the Passenger side firewall, you will find the A/C - Accumulator / Drier ( black , round canister with A/C lines attached)
Approx 4 inchs below it on the Firewall you will see an OUTLET/NIPPLE protruding from the firewall about 3 inches or so.
This is your Condensation drain outlet.
If yours is/was like mine, it has no hoses attached, it just sticks straight out of the firewall.
COVER this outlet with a piece of Duct Tape, so water can not ESCAPE from it, and NO water can ENTER it.
Now Take your hose and SPRAY the firewall around the Outlet, and then CHECK the inside to see if NEW WATER appears.
It MOST LIKELY will.
The problem becomes apparent, When the DRAIN outlet is dripping water, some of it runs back along the underside of the outlet tube, and back into the truck, thru the firewall.
So, I romoved the duct tape, went to my shed, and found a piece of rubber hose that fit snugly Over the Drain outlet tube. I angled the hose downward at about 45 degrees, and started the truck and turned on the A/C, and waited & watched.
VOILA! NO MORE Water coming back into the truck, and you should see the volume of water that now pours onto the ground instead of BACK into the truck!
So, IF you have that MYSTERIOUS Pass. side WET carpet, and are at your wits end, TRY THIS. It Worked for me, and took about 30 seconds to fix.
And for the WET CARPET, I just dried it as best I could on top, and underneath with a lot of dry towels, Then I took a Blow Dryer and Ran it for a LONG TIME drying it all out. Then I Sprinkled a whole box of Baking Soda on the carpet, and let it absorb the Moisture & Odor, and when It was dry, I used a brush & Vac to Vacum it all up.
Worked great & no odors.
Hope this helps someone, it sure worked for my leak!

if you are experiencing wetness on the carpet near the door sill.. you can also check the long phillips head screws that protrude down the doorsill and stick out underneath the cab of the truck... my drivers side didnt have the black goopy thread sealent on them and i was getitng water up through them screws and wetting my carpet
WOW dude NICE job with the tip !!!
I haven't noticed the carpet being wet on mine, but I HAVE noticed that black thing-a-ma-bob that hangs below the glove box right above where you ladyfriends tootsies would have been has been getting a little condensation build up every once in a while. ( I say every once in a while but to be honest with you I'm not over there checking it all the time. LOL. I don't know if it drips, but it does feel like it's "sweating".
Anyway .... thanks again for the tip !! It's cats like you that keep me comming back !!
