Default axle swapped!

...ok ok, not for one tons (yet), but for another 9.25.

i had started getting a leak from a rear brake, so i pulled the drum off (i had not checked the back brakes since i got the truck). good thing i looked...the shoes were SO bad, not only was all the pad gone, but the actual metal of the shoe was worn through!

fortunately for me, one of my friends has his old axles from his sport, that he put 1 tons in. so i nabbed his rear axle, complete with almost brand new EVERYTHING, 4.10's, and posi. feels alot better than my old 3.55's. i also managed to fix the leaking seal off of the transfer case to rear driveshaft connection.

next week we plan to install the 4.10's out of his front axle into mine, and since he still has some brand new hubs floating around, they are going in as well.

somehow in the proccess of swapping axles, my driveshaft got painted bright aluminum foil silver too. damn friends

here's my problem though...in my hasty effort to finish while it was still light out, i broke the tone ring sensor [:@] it went back together, but now my speedo doesn't work. also, my abs and brake lights are not going out this time.

i tried looking online at a few places, but couldnt find the tone ring sensor. does anyone know of a good place to get one, or am i gonna end up getting killed by the dealership on a DS only part?

thanks

why dont you just can it from your old axle.. or is it 4.10 specific? i wouldnt think so.. a tone ring is a tone ring right?

anyway.. yea.. aluminum collored driveshaft huh? might be mistaken for a ford DS hehehehe

i was gonna say becarefull running 4WD with 2different axle rations... thatll really **** of your drive train... not to insult your knowledge... but its always good to point out the obvious to prevent a stupid mistake...

the brake lights happend to me aswell when i swapped the wheel cylinders for the 1ton mod... r the brakes bled really well? might wanna inspect the drums and springs and everything..make sure everything is there if you havnt already..

4.10's are wicked nice though right? that LSD is gonna be a night and day difference too! (remember when you do fluid changes in that rearend to use the mopar friction modifier..i think 8oz's treats a full 9.25 LSD. ive heard alot of complaints about the stuff off hte shelf and the big box stores like traxis (sp?)

It's a possibility that your abs light won't go out because your abs porbably won't operate now. It uses speed sensors around the truck to sense wheel lockup. If it cannot sense speeds from a broken tone ring, there's a chance that's your issue. I had a simliar issue on a GM vehicle, that I hated. A wheel speed sesnor went out and took abs and traction control with it. After three times replaceing that thing and it failing months later at $400 a pop, I traded the car for a mopar as well.

the tone ring doesnt change with the gears. They are all the same.

The abs light is definatley not going out because of the sensor. Thats where the abs is on more than half the 2nd gen dodge trucks. Rear ABS

I would check the stealer. Sometimes they suprise ya and the part is reasonably priced.

as far as swaping the gears in the front. Why? I would swap the whole axle. It would be cheaper and it would take the same amount or less time. and you would have a trussed D44.

so you snagged bills old axles huh, thats a good idea though of taking the front gears out and putting them in yours. i wouldnt swap that front axle in my truck after he was running what, 40's on it. [8D]

40's on a d44????? ouch......... good to know he swaped out the axles eventually. just pull the gears. full swap would be nice and easy, but ya don't want problems like 40's on a d44 will cause.

sounds like fun otherwise.

as to picking up the tone ring sensor... you might be able to pick one up from the junkyard. i know the junkyard here can get me parts like that new, or off a wreck. and a TON cheaper than the dealer. (where i, my ex roommate, his friends, locals, and everyone else goes to get parts) damn i love that junkyard...

I have a decent salvage yard here in MT, but nothing like my old yard back in MN. I used to go there on my Saturdays and crawl through the yard looking for good aftermarket stuff other people had on thier vehicles and then wrecked. I had alot of cool stuff on my old suburban. The yards around here won't let you just crawl because of insurance reasons. Yes it's understandable, but unfortunate. I go there and they ask "What are you looking for?" And I say, " I dunno yet." I miss those days. When you know what you are looking for it gives the junk yard guy a chance to jack up the price. more power to them, but hey, let me go look for my own, you know?

oh should've mentioned this before...but his old axle did not have the tone ring sensor on it, he used it for something else.

i am probably gonna hit a scrap yard near me that has some rams in it, and see if they'll let me grab that sensor.

also my hub took a sh^t on me today, just was pulling in to the work parking lot as it started self destructing. i got it parked and there was smoke coming from the bearing [:@]
luckily bill was able to hook me up again, and he had a brand new hub lying around, which i will install in the parking lot tomorrow after work. the hubs he has are the more expensive ones, with 4 bearings inside instead of the NAPA type with only 2. so hopefully this wont be an issue again.

and as for swapping the whole axle...he had modified the axle for a specific spring/shock combo, so it will not work with my stock stuff. the plan is, since i plan on adding the higher quality 4 bearing hubs anyway, to swap the 4.10's in while i have everything apart.
who knows, i can fix that leaking passenger side axle shaft seal, and my truck might not leak anything for once! i'm excited
