High humidity misfire? Try a new distributer cap.

The only other thing is the the coil. Old school experience says cracked cap (99+%) but if you've already tried that ...

Ok, next time it's really damp out, and the truck won't start ... spray WD-40 all over the suspected part and then crank it again (WD-40 displaces moisture). If it fires RIGHT up ... you've found your problem. If not ... look elsewhere.

Maybe if you have a digital camera or a good cell phone camera you could take a pic of the vacuum solenoid you are talking about. Just for the fun of it I would look over your distributor cap one more time, sometimes you miss something and TMS is exactly right about the moisture problem.

Also just thought of something else, when were the plugs replaced last. They would have nothing to do with a hard start condition in a damp setting only but they sure won't make starting any easier if they are worn out.

Ok, when you changed the cap, you changed the rotor, too, yes? Anything that can run your spark to ground (rather than to the plugs) can cause this problem. A crack in the rotor can cause a path (in high humidity) for the high voltage to dump through the distributor shaft to ground.

History has shown that hard starting in high humidity situations is limitited to the ignition system. We used to just pull the distributor cap and spray it down inside (WD-40 again) when the weather got damp (and the wires, too, if that didn't work) to fix a hard start problem. Have you tried the coil yet?

Default RE: starting problems

the wires were replaced about when the problem started...i replace the coil but my only issue is even if it was the distrubutor or rotor why would the vaccum sollinoids( or what ever they are called) be making a ticking noise.... there is a wire from the solionoid going from there to the back of the trottle body!!!.. when i unplug one of them the ticking stops at the place but the other 2 points still make the noise...like i said i think its a vacum solinoid buyt really dont know what they are but there is three locations the back left of the engine(sorta by the distrubor) on on the back right and has 2 lines in or out and a bummy thing i dunno what for and the one on the back of the trottle body..i am sorry for my explaination i am trying to decribe it as best as i can...
