I just bought a 98 1500 4x4 with the 318. I have had a Dakota for the past 13 years and loved it. Anyway my neighbor had this 1500 for sale and I bought it…
Now, I am noticing that the steering seems very loose, 3 or 4 inches of play in the steering wheel. Is this normal? The truck has 70,000 miles and has not been abused; the worst off road it has ever seen would be no more than a well kept dirt road. I love everything else, it is in near perfect condition… just the steering, can I tighten it any way (have it done)…
Any comments of advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Sarge, check your wheel bearings they might be loose. If that is not the case check suspension or steering components(ie, tie rods, pitman arm, and steering damper). Lastly check the steering gear box and make sure it is not damaged or out of adjustment.

Trac bar! If it's never been replaced, then it's time ![Wink](https://dodgeforum.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif)
You should have someone lay under the front end. Then turn the key on to unlock the steering wheel and JUST wiggle it back and forth. To the point where the wheels barely start to move. The person underneath the truck should be able to see where the play is.
