I have no clue, but would love to find out. One guy who rebuilds engines said I could possibly have a carbon buildup causing it.... Does that sound likely?

That is a good question, who does sell a good replacement motor at a good price?

I just went through this same thing with my motor. 106k and it was junk! Blowing smoke and loosing oil pressure while driving.

First I priced a rebuild kit for it. Cheapest I found one was for $975. Thats some serious money for a rebuild kit!!! Definately a far cry from a small block chevy rebuild kit.

Some other option are a crate motor which will run you around $1500. In my personal opinion if you are dead set on a new motor, get the crate motor. By the time you get the rebuild kit and have the machine work done to oversize the pistions your right at the cost of a crate motor. This is also the fastest way to get the truck on the road again.

If you dont need pistons/rings then you can get a crank with bearings for $225. You can get a set of stock size rings for around $110. Even after you do this, you still have your heads to deal with, gaskets, etc.

I searched online at www.car-parts.com and found a low mileage 360 out of a 97 Ram. Turns out it was at a yard a buddy works at. I got the motor with 61k original miles for $650. Put it in and it runs mint.

There are many options. Just depends which road you want to go down to get it on the road again. I did the salvage motor so I can tear down my stock motor, build it up and put it back in later.

We're gonna pull the motor and put a new crankshaft in. My brother in law listened to it a bit ago and he just looked at me and said "yea, its f***ed." While I"m at it I'm gonna put an oversize cam in it. Any suggestions on that? Plus, does anybody have a chilton manual they wanna sell for cheap?

Read the "Merry Christmas" thread. You can download the Field Service Manual there. Chock full of more information than a person ought to have.

Rebuild kits -- You get what you pay for.
Used engine -- You get what you pay for.

IMHO, do the job right the first time. I honestly thing you lucked out with dropping a used engine from a junked vehicle into your truck. I am the kind who will spend the money to go through everything from the get go. Imagine how you would feel dropping in a $650 used engine and having it fail within a few weeks or months.

Yea, I'm gonna take the time to rebuild it right, one of my buddies is gonna help me. I'm gonna sink about $600-700 into a new crankshaft, oversize cam, etc

I knew I did not luck out. The truck was wrecked and came in running. We compression tested the cylinders and did a leak down. All checked out very good, then ran it through the rpm range. For $650 I could not go wrong. You cant get a new motor for anything close to that. Everyone has their own way of getting an end result.

For what this truck is used for, I had no second thoughts. For someone who is using their truck as a daily driver then it is a different story.
