Just bought a 97, few questions.
This is the first newish truck i've had in years. I bought it from a dealership with 60k on it And it's in great shape. But i have a few questions;
1. it doesn't seem to take bumps very well, they seel to really upset the suspension, i was thinking about installing some rancho twin tube shocks. Has anybody tried this?
2. It's a 5.9 and the shifts are way too soft for me, so i want to go with a shift kit. I see Summit Racing sells the transgo kit for $100, but sombody else posted a transgo kit for $30. I assume the $100 one is the better one?
3. The clock on the radio acks real strange and only one speaker (passenger side) works, is the head just fried?

twin tubes might give you a undiserd effect.. if you want to sofften up the ride id go with rancho rs9000's adjustable so you can set it at one for a smoother ride and 9 for a harder when you need/want it.. and if your truck is a 4X4.. its always gonna hit bumps like a truck.. it aint a cadilac!
retail is around that price for a transgo,, that dude might be getting it off ebay.. a tv cable adjust ment is a backyards mechanic fix to soft shifts.. but too much adjustment can damage the tranny.. if your interested serach tv cable and youll find how to adjust it
for the radio.. they way you describe it it sounds like the deck is fried/shot and or your speakers.. wouldnt hurt for an aftermarket deck and or speakers...

The isue with most 97 and earlier radios is the cup holder just above it. Condensation from the beer and other bump splashes end up in the radio. If you need a factory AM/FM cassette player they are easy to find on Ebay. I might be willing to part with the one I pulled out shortly after I got the truck, before it had the chance to catch my drinks.
As far as the shocks, are they too soft or stiff? The factory ones were to soft and if they are original than they are way too soft.
SHOTT, Whats the deal about Bucky??????????

Well sombody hit me on the way out of my driveway today, yay, only owned it one day so far! The bumper and condersor/tranny cooler are toast, but the rest is fine.
The tape deck is definantly dead, i'll just have to get an aftermarket unit. The shocks are too stiff and soft at the same time. They honesly feel like a car my friend had where the shocks and struts had gone bad. I was thinking rancho RS17000. Yeah the TV might be the problem, i'll check into that. (i thought all late nintys trucks had Electronic shift)

Well that sucked. But it looks like it's not going to be too bad. I think i'll go with a set of some Edelbrock IAS shocks. I also want to take care of the radio with an aftermarket unit. There's some frame rust so i'm thinking about painting it with some rust neutralizer.
Oh and i'm going to adjust the TV when it comes back from the Body shop.

I would say that shocks won't be your problem. I would check, tie rod ends, track bar and ball joints.
Get someone to wiggle the steering wheel while you lay underneath and look. If you say any play in the track bar etc it needs replaced. Do a search for the death wobble on this forum. I just replaced most of the front end on my truck so this is fresh in my mind. The track bar aint cheap either.

my truck was doing the same on bumps as you described. new shocks fixed it, went with monroe sensatrac. my front springs are shot too and that is causing pretty mucht he same problem.
as for the shifts, i just had my tranny guy do a full fluch, went to synthetic, and did a band adjustment. it shifts much tighter now.
and get new speakers if they are still stock. i got a pair of infinity spekers at best buy and they sound 10x better than the stock ones.

1. I'm taking the Pioneer head out of my old truck and i'll put it in this one and hopefully that'll fix the sound up.
2. I'm gonna try new shocks first and see where that puts me, cause it's cheaper then trackbar/tierods and i'm gonna want to do that anyway. [Edit: Doesn't sound like a "death wobble" to me, as it's not in the front end, it's more of a rear 'not dissapating counteracting forces' type situation. Anyways, my shocks look pretty rough.]
3. I'm gonna try to audjust the TV linkage, and then i'll see about a flush and fill, i'll probably want to do a shift kit anyway, but that whole thing gets kind of expensive pretty quickly and i'm not made of money.

Bucky Phillips is in a jail about 45 miles from my house. My best friend is a trooper and he did 9 days of searching. They were making all the troops do rotations during the search. I'm not breaking the troops ***** but you have to give this guy credit for his ability to survive in the wild. They just found the rifle that he shot the troopers with. They also just arrested a close friend of Buckys who was harboring him while he was a fugitive. A couple of railroaders that I used to work with in Elmira, NY say the town was filled with reporters.
He'll never see the light of day again. I thought killing a cop used to be a capital offense. I guess it no longer is. They should just shoot the guy. I'll pull the trigger.
