Default 1500 towing

My son has an '01 1500 with the towing package & 5.9 engine. He's thinking of buying a 24', 5000 lb. 5th wheeler. Is this too much trailer for the truck, or is it reasonable for him to tow this?
Thanks,
Roger

The trailer wouldn't be too much for the truck with the proper hitch and a brake controller, BUT does he actually want to put something on the trailer? If so, then he would be pushing it big time with only a 1/2 ton.

Roger,
I assume he got a camper. The truck probably has 3.55 gears, too. It might do OK if the pin weight is not too much but that is very difficult to manage woth a 5th wheel. It usually runs about 20% of the total trailer weight and that will quickly put the 1/2 rear axle over the weight limit. Will it bust the truck? Probably not, but towing it will get old. If there are a lot of hills its no fun either. Gas milage usually tanks at 8-10 mpg.
For local camping, just have fun. BTDT. Pulling with a CTD is way more fun and less stressful but everyone can't run out to buy a different truck. If he keeps the junk out of the trailer and the weight low as possible, it should work out.

Thanks--I should have mentioned it's a camper, so just the typical camping gear would be in it.

Thanks for the information, Steve. I don't think he'll be towing it far, but there are a few hills in northern Michigan, where he lives. Sounds like he'll have to be careful & realize it's a heavy load for the half ton.
