cummins conversion?
has anybody ever swapped a cummins in the gas 2500 ram? i heard a 12 valve would be easier the a 24 valve cause there is know computer? i really want to do this so if anybody can help with any tips i would really appreciate it. thank you, brian.
it can be done, just realize you also need the trans, t case.... a guy on pavementsucks swapped a cummins into his 1500. as far as i know everything away a direct swap other then the harness and the kind stuff

All depends on what motor you start with. If you start with a V10, then all you really need is the CTD.What year truck are you starting with? What motor? 2wd or 4wd?
As far as 12v vs. 24v, 12 valves are easier to swap if your truck is 98.5 or older. They're a more reliable motor, but it's harder to mod them for more power...it also costs you more $$$ to do so.
Ah, you would have an easier time swapping in a 24valve motor then as they were the motor put in the 98.5 and newer trucks. Much less rewiring to do. You will definitely need a different transmission and transfer case though, along with the wiring harnesses for the motor and transmission.
Let us know what the engine and harness willl cost ya, I've been thinking about doing the same thing with my '02 2500 V10. This new Biodiesel stuff would make fuel cheaper(and smell better), and Banks is getting ridiculous HP and torque out of the CTD. Still LOVE my V10, but 600+ hp and 1200ftlbs is awefully tempting.
Someone dropped a 12v Cummins into a 1500??
Now that is a sweet project! How do I find this fella? Do you know if it was a 2wd or 4? I'm guessing 4 but I wonder if it would be easier in a 2wd.

It was a 4wd
He did it the right way, by swapping the entire driveline (including axles) along with the suspension from a CTD equipped truck. That is the right way, but the thing you have to remember is that just because it has a CTD in it and the suspension components from one, doesn't mean it has the weight carrying/moving capacity of a CTD. It's still missing the beefier frame along with the larger braking system.
I didn't even think about the whole frame issue. Then again to be honest I'd probably only do the switch for the sheer power of the setup. I imagine it could be made to seriously scoot. So maybe I'll start passively looking for a wrecked 2500 series.... Of course I'd have to shorten the drive shaft as mine is a SB... I should really stop even thinking about that as it would probably be a waste if 8k or more. And thats if I even did all the labor. Its still a very neat premise.
I'd just be happy if I could get a 5spd in my truck. Know if anyone has done anything like that??

I don't want to ruin the fun here but if you really want a CTD in your truck, why not save the time and expense and just go buy a 2500 truck. If its pulling power you want a 3/4 ton will pull better and a dually 1-ton will pull way better. I understand why you would want a diesel when it comes to offroading but 1/2 ton running gear probably wont hold up anyway. Just seems like alot of money spent and time wasted IMO.
