i had a plow on my 98 1500 wouldent go any bigger then a 7.5 tho mine sagged pretty good with the plow on it, so with the stock front springs you will need a good deal of weight in the back for ballest, also if your interested later down the road i have some springs from a 3500 that will fit right up, lol for sale.

I was thinking of adding a plow also. I've got a 1500, but thought of using 2500 coils, maybe cut a coil off of the ride height is too much. I see alot of 1500's with plows, but they look a bit droopy in the front.
Some guys use Timbren SES, but I always thought that was more of a crutch. Really should have a 2500 to begin with. Need a high output alt, and a tranny cooler. Plus I only have 3.55 gears. Snowblower is cheaper.
The SnoWay plows are a bit lighter, but they cost. Buddy had one, pretty sweet.

I agree that 7.5' is pretty much the max for a 1/2 ton. I had a 7ft Meyer on my Ramcharger for 15 years and it held up nicely. That truck has posi differentials though, and was full time 4wd.
Personally, I wouldn't put a plow on a 1/2 ton if you plan on plowing more than just your driveway. It's VERY hard on the truck. In other words, things break more often. That's why I bought my V10...for plowing. Until I saw that it was in decent shape and not rusty. I decided to keep it for a project truck and find something else to plow with.
If you're going to put a plow on a 1/2 ton, you'll have to at least upgrade to the plow package springs...larger alternator...and transmission cooler. Gear ratio doesn't matter so much. You may also want to look into a Meyer plow. They're a little lighter than the westerns. Especially the poly (plastic) meyer plows. They're durable, but would be a lot easier on your truck.
Stay away from the SnoWays

what i did was i bought the 3500 springs, which i believe are the same as the 2500, swapped them on the truck, and for the back i bought a rear add a leaf to balance it out.
here was the rear add a leaf.

Rom, what's the deal with cutting coils? I know torching them is bad news, but wasn't aware of cutting.

For a 1/2 ton truck and a regular straight blade of 7.5ft or less, I'd recommend a #38 spring (for passenger side) and a #39 spring (for driver side). Those were standard plow prep springs.
