Hypertech Programmer or Mopar PCM
I am trying to decide if I want to go with a Hypertech Programmer or get a Mopar Performance PCM. My truck is a 97 1500 4wd 360.
Is it true the Mopar requires you to run 93 octane? It looks as if the Hypertech allows you to choose between 87 and 93 octane.
Aside from that is there anything the Mopar offers that is "superior" over the hypertech?

The Mopar PCM offers much better performance compared to the Hypertech. At one time, they used to advertise 26hp, 27ftlbs gain. Hypertech advertises something like 15hp or so. I have tried both, and the Mopar PCM is far superior.
As for having to run 93 octane, that depends. They say you have to run that octane because the amount of timing advance that it puts in can cause you to have pinging. I have a 180 t-stat, and cooler plugs, and live in a colder climate overall, and on stretches of cold days have gotten away with running mid grade with no issues. If you live in a hot climate, or have a truck that is more prone to pinging, you probably will have to run 93 octane.

The hypertech WILL NOT allow you to reprogram for tire size on the 97 Rams. The 97s use a gear in the rear end to determine speed. The hypertech will only do tire size on the 98.5 and newer Rams.
*EDITED OUT THE ORIGINAL COMMENTS THAT WERE HERE..Silver_Dodge explained it better*
Let me add though that you can play with your spark plug selection to help control pinging. On the other hand, if you tow a lot...or have a heavy foot (put load on the motor), you will have to run 93 grade fuel.
It's important to note that the Mopar Performance PCMs are discontinued. So if you find one, you can't do too much thinking about buying it, because it won't be available for very long
In my opinion, the Mopar PCM is worth it. I love the one that's in my truck. I love it so much that I bought two...one for a spare
Made a big difference!

get the pcm or buy my hypertech
I am running the Mopar PCM on my truck. I cant tell you how well it helped because it was on the truck when I got it. But a lot of people think that running 93 octane is a big deal. You are talking about a whole $3-$5 a tank. That is worth it. On my old '97 I ran 93 in it all the time just because the truck performed better with it. IT semmed to idle better and just run better overall.

Doesnt Hughes or KRC offer a reflash service for the stock ECM?

For me, it was pretty much across the board improvement, but seemed most noticable at low to mid RPM. Just basically feels more powerful and power seems more instant (this is why I believe torque management is decreased or removed completely with the Mopar PCM's).
