Default Coolant leak

Well I drove to my dads this morning and when i got out of the truck it smelled weird....almost like pancake syrup or something. I dont think anything of it, drive back home pull into the garage get out and still smell it so I pop the hood, dont see anything. Crawl underneath and there is liquad all over. By the smell and color I can tell it is anti-freeze. I looked for a while and couldnt figure out where it was coming from. So I start the truck let it idle and there isnt any, but after letting it idle for a couple minutes I see a stream of collant falling from the very front right of the oil pan right above the transmision lines. It is running down from somewhere uptop. There is a pool of anti-freeze behind the a/c compressor, so its something around there......any ideas what it could be?

just had the same problem over the weekend, my problem was the coolant by-pass hose. it ripped where the compression rings are attached. $4.99 at shucks. it's a pain to replace, had to remove belts, alternator, AC, AC/Alt bracket just to get to it.

bene

I had the same problem a year ago. However unlike the other replies mine was the timing cover gasket. The water pump is conected to the outside of the timing cover and there is a water inlet and outlet on both sides that run through it. You need to take off the entire front of the motor to replace it as well as the oil pan gasket. I hope it is just the bipass hose but its almost just as much work. If You deside to do it, it would be an awsome time to replace that 195 deg stat for a 180, if you haven't already done so. Good luck!

i had that problem a few weeks ago and i had a freeze plug leaking the way to check to make sure is go to a local shop and put some pressure through ur cooling system and crawl under the truck and see where it is leaking

if it is the freeze pluge there only a couple of bucks and not hard to replace just have to drain the coolant

*edit* man I have good paint skills!!

I started leaking coolant about 4 weeks ago, and turns out it was my water pump. Had it replaced and its been good ever since. Even though I can still smell antifreeze once in a while when the engine is warm, I think (hope) its just reminiscence of the coolant that leaked before I got it fixed. (No coolant is leaking now from what I can tell)

So wait...is it a coolant, heater, or water bypass hose?....I have seen it called all three.

*Edit* Nevermind I saw it called a water pump bypass hose in the manual.

It's called different things, depending on the make, model, and motor.
