Default Power Window Trouble

I have a 99 1500 5.9l 2wd and have recently started having trouble with the drivers side window. Sometimes it will work, sometimes it wont. It seems like the longer you go without trying to use it, then it will work, but then it will quit again. Does anyone know if this would be the switch or the motor? Or if there is a way that I can check? Any help is greatly appreciated as this is pretty annoying. Thanks.

Sounds like the regulator is failing on you. You can't buy it alone though. It comes with the motor as a unit.

If you end up replacing it, www.rockauto.com is probably the best place to get a replacement.

Would the motor still work if it just the regulator and if so would you still be able to hear it?

Yes, the motor will still work. Regulators tend to slowly fail. Once the regulator fails though, your motor won't go up and down anymore.

You can check the switch out, but the symptoms sound like a regulator problem to me.

Great!!! Thanks for the help. Guess it doesnt really matter much since you have to buy the motor and regulator together. Any idea how tough this is too change?

Nope, I've never changed one on a Ram. The one I changed on my Grand Prix was riveted in, and wasn't too fun to get out. Not sure if the Ram one is rivetied or bolted in.

There is a Dodge Ram service manual available for download here: https://dodgeforum.com/m_340929/tm.htm that should be able to walk you through the process though.

I checked the RockAuto site, and it looks like the motor can be purchased separately.

You can buy the lift motor separately.

Not the regulator motor though. Check under "Window Regulator". It lists as Regulator w/Motor

The regulator is what fails 99% of the time, and for a long time they weren't available aftermarket. I see Dorman has one now though. They're definitely the best brand out there for aftermarket electrical and interior components.

So there is a lift motor and regulator motor? What testing can you do to tell for sure what the problem is? Of course the 99% is a pretty good indicator.

I honestly don't know what kind of testing you can do for the lift motor. Check out the service manual I linked you to earlier in the thread
