IMO..

Anything under 15,000 is a waste...

Anything over 50,000 is pushing it...

Between 25,000 and 30,000 miles if you don't do a lot of towing.

Between 15,000 and 20,000 if you do a lot of towing.

It's fairly important, as having your rear-end rebuilt can run you between $500 and $1000.

BTW, it's also VERY important to change the fluid by removing the differential cover. That way you can make sure the bottom of the housing clean and gunk free, and can also check for metal shavings/loose metal/gear wear.
