Default found this swimming in the rear diff...

Does anyone know what these chunks of metal might be? The rear diff has never given me any problems and the posi still works, but this is scary!

How did a pen get in your rear diff?

I looks to me to be part of your posi unit. If it is a factory posi, my guess is that the long peice and the tab looking peice (farthest from the pen) are from the plates in the clutch pack. The other peice (closest to the pen) might be from the flange half or bottom half. Here is a picture of the pack from the service manual, I think this is where these pieces came from.

I would get it fixed asap before peices like this get into the gears and really tear things up. If all you have to do at this point is replace the posi, that is not too bad. If you tear the gears up, it gets more expensive.

I agree with Silver. Pieces that large are DEFINITELY not normal. You need to get that to a good shop, or tear it down yourself asap if you have the technology. Something is definitely wrong.

Thanks Silver Dodge, I looked all over the internet this afternoon for blow-up diagram like that and never did find one! So, can I assume it is possible that no real damage has been done....yet? It had shown no symptoms whatsoever and SEEMS to be operating properly. How much are we talking about to have a repair like this done? (definately beyond my abilities).

Thanks again!! This site rocks!

Probablt 4 to 5 bills...depending on labor rates. I'd go with a Detroit true trac or anything beefier than the factory LSD. Eventually you will have a non functionng differential, and a lot more collateral damage.

What you have there is a retainer clip piece and a clutch pack ring.Definately needs to be repaired before the rest breaks.Randy's Ring & Pinion sells the clutch packs for around $70 to do both axles last time I did mine-a few years ago. The "trash loc" lsd is famous for this happening, the clutch packs mtbf is around 70,000 miles. Not to bad a job to replace if you are mechanically inclined.

Well, I am moderately mechanically inclined, but definately not a mechanic! Is there a step by step thing anywhere like there is for the plenum fix? I might try to tackle it if I had instructions!!

Hey 94Champ, when you did yours did you replace just the clutch packs? Or were bearings and others items required? (Need to know what I should order) I called the Dodge dealer here and they won't touch it unless they can rebuild the whole thing for $1400.00. Not gonna happen. I either find someone to replace what's broken or do it myself. Also, I checked the Randy's web site and couldn't find where I can buy the clutch packs by themselves. Might just have to call them.

Thanks
