what kind of oil do you use?
i just got a plenum kit from hughes and it came with a piece of paper that says dont use oils that have an api rating of sl, sj, or sm because they have reduced the zinc/phosphorous additive about 40% to reduce catalytic converter contamination. i guess thats the additive that reduces wear in high pressure areas like cams and lifters. It also says no to use oils classified as energy conserving because they wont provice the wear protection that you need.
well, at wallmart thats all they have. I dont know if its hughes just trying to sell there additive or if i shouldnt be using these oils.

I don't know about any of that, I have ran Castrol Syntec 5W-30 as long as I have owned my truck with no problems yet. I could be wrong but I think you will be fine to run whatever type of oil you want. I have sort of thought about trying Royal Purple but I'm still not sold on whether or not it is worth the price.
No 5W-30 is fine, it rarely gets hot enough here to have to worry about that. My truck holds good oil pressure and doesn't burn enough to notice. Oil is definently a preference thing anyway. The way I see it as long as you change it regularly it shouldn't matter what brand or weight you use.
5w-30... man that is thin... i used to use 5w50 in my old hondas and ran the **** out of them w/o failure.
i used mobil 1 15w50 in my 2000... since using synthetic oils I have never had any internal failures of any kind other than the plenum leak... which has nothing to do with what oil is in there.

I was also told to watch for that API seal on oil. I have been told to use 10w40 as this does not have the seal on it. I use it in an older Dodge 383 I have as well as my truck. If you watch the Castrol bottles 10w40 does not have that seal. That's what I use anyway.

Hot Rod magazine had an article about this a few months back. These additives are for wear. Cost and EPA have reduced them. They mostly affect solid lifter cams and the breakin of new cams. According to the article, most new cams get trashed from initial start and run with improper lubricants.

i use Mobil 1 10w30 synthetic. have for the last 3 years. no idea if its better or not, but im sticking with it. my old mazda pickup i always used diesel oil. it just sucked int he winter. i will never ever use quaker state as i think it produces alot of sludge and wazy buildup inside.
