Default Transmission swap?

I have a 95 1500 2wd. Would it be worth it to swap the auto for a 5 speed? Mostly for performance.

I'd like to know what the swap entails...I am going to check the search feature and see what it says, I got my eye on a ram with an auto, and if I buy it and the trans takes a dump, it gets a stick

I would think that your money would be better spent on performance parts for the engine. I don't know what you would spend to get all the parts for that swap but you will still have to modify the engine to get the performance you want. If the tranny you have now decides to go that might be something you could look into but for right now spend your money on the engine.

I have been looking at a few things for the motor

How about gears, what do they run front and rear?

I am a ford guy so this mopar stuff is totally new.

I don't know what ratio stock 4x4's are running, I am a 2wd guy. You may be able ot find the fron differential gear ration on the sticker under your hood, it should also have your rear axle gear ratio.

I difinitely need to get performance parts for the engine, but I love driving a 5 speed and I figured it could help since i could launch higher and get it moving better. I think the 4x4s are either 3.92 or 4.10 geared.

That is correct but you are going to have to spend some time learning to shift it, because I have only met a few racers who can shift their cars as consistently as an automatic can. It just seems like alot of work to put a 5 speed in for performance when you are running a mostly stock engine. Trust me there are lots of cool things that I want to do to my truck but right now the performance is way more important to me so I am spending every spare buck on engine performance parts. In the end its up to you, I just don't think it is worth it.

Shifting a 5 speed is the easy part. My truck takes so long to launch. My 60 foot times at the track are horrible. It would be like swapping a 5 speed into a mustang. That's the most common upgrade on a mustang or honda or most other cars. If you can even half a** drive a 5 speed, you'll beat a car or truck of the same setup, but auto, by at least half a second. I was just curious to see if it was a hard swap. Surely a 5 speed would compliment an m1 intake, mopar ecu, and other bolt ons.

Wrong, on a mustang, the most common swap is gears or exhaust since they respond so well to either.

True. Unless it's an auto. If it's already a 5 speed then gears and exhaust are the best.
