Default Summit Volt Max X-Treme Kit

Im looking to do a little tune-up work on the ol dodge and I was wondering if anyone has used this kit on their truck. Also what kind of plugs do you guys recommend. I have seen the Champion Truck Plugs and the Autolite 3923 mentioned quite a bit are these two the favorites of most. I appreciate any and all help.

Thank You, Lucas

Also, should I look at changing my coil when I do all this?

Thanks, Lucas

It looks like in the picture the terminals on the cap are brass, that is what you want. The wires are 8mm and that is bigger than stock, I am running 9mm on my truck, they are Accels but my wires cost me about twice what the whole kit here would cost you, so I would go with the Summits. An upgraded coil certainly wouldn't hurt, if you are serious about it look in the DIY section there is a write-up and the components he uses are the same as what I have and I am very happy with it. As far as plugs I have ran both the Champion Truck Plugs and the Autolite 3923's, I found better mileage and performance from the Champions so unless you have a pinging problem I wouldn't worry about the Autolites yet.

Thanks SilverRam, I thought that kit looked like a pretty good setup for the money. I do have a pinging issue, and its terrible unless I run High Octane, so I have just been doing that would the Autolites help with that? Also what is a good resonably priced coil?

Thanks, Lucas

Your pinging issue may be due to a leaking plenum gasket, do a search for plenum and you'll get alot of info on it. The Autolites should help because they will lower your combustion chamber temps which is a cause of pre-detenation (pinging). There are a few coil upgrades you can do, I think it is Accel that makes the direct replacement coil that bolts in the stock location. I got a steal on my MSD box so I run it with a Blaster 3, this isn't a a cheap set-up but it is worth it in the long run. If you don't have the cash now though don't worry about upgrading your coil, you can always do that later and the stock coil will work fine with the Summit kit.

Yeah I have been looking at the Plenum Fix, but if 93 Octane keeps it from pinging, is it hurting anything to not fix it? Just curious, I'd like to do it in the future but its not really in the budget right now if it can wait. Will my original stock coil be okay with this new summit system, I mean it does have 200,00+ miles on it. Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions, Im just trying to learn all I can. Im glad I found this forum, I have been gleaning alot of good information off of it.

Thanks, Lucas

As far as the coil, if its not broke don't fix it now. The kit you have isn't going to require the coil output to be higher, it just works better with one that has a higher output. I don't know about the 93 octane either, if it is taking that much to keep it from pinging I would look into the plenum fix ASAP.

Well I havent tried it with mid-grade, so Im not sure if it would make a difference of not. What exactly is it hurting if it is leaking? And if it has been doin this for a while is there anything I need to do when I upgrade the plenum?

Thanks, Lucas

You are sucking oil in through you intake, so oil is getting in places it shouldn't be. If oil gets in your cylinders you can have alot of carbon build up in your combustion chambers. This is what causes the "ping" it is also known as carbon knock. If your truck has 200,000 I would look at replacing the timing chain too, it has nothing to do with the intake but on our trucks it is a good idea, as I can imagine it has alot of slack in it. After you do your plenum I would reccomend getting some combustion chamber cleaner or some top-engine cleaner to help get rid of that carbon you have built up. You can use water too but it is a complicated procedure, I would just get the cleaner.
