Default Help replacing PCV valve

I was replacing my spark plug wires and noticed a modest amount of oil leaking from around the PCV grommet on to the valve cover. I figured I would go get another grommet and valve in there while I was at it, but I can't get the faulty one out. Is there a recommended method for getting it out? A recommended tool? I don't want to man-handle it and get pieces falling in the hole.

screwdriver... if your replacing the gromit, just pry it all out. as long as you dont bend the valve cover in doing so you should have no problem. you should try to get the valve out 1st though, taking both out at the same time may be tough as there is a lip on the bottom of the valve which might make things really tight.

Thanks Steve00ram360, I'll be careful with the valve cover. Just didn't want to get rough with valve/grommet until I was sure.

Age and heat tend to dry the grommet out over time and make it difficult to remove. The best time to remove it though, is when the grommet is hot. Once its been dryed out, only heat tends to make it pliable. You will use some moxie removing it. Take th valve off, and try prying the grommet up by inserting a screwdiver or brake adjustment tool (looks like a small prybar) in the PCV valve hole. The rubber grommet has a large flap that covers the valve cover hole, you'd really have to work to get back in there.

I just installed a new grommet on my truck and it was a bear to both install the grommet AND the PCV valve. That was *after* I had left the grommet in the Oklahoma sun for about 30 minutes.
