Default Lifter tapping

Recently I have noticed a lifter tap in my 318 but only when rpm's are above 2000 rpm...any reason for this and is there anything that can be done short of replacement?

There could be some sludge in the lifter that is causing this. For a cheap attempt to fix, I have heard about trying a can of marvel mystery oil in the engine. If it is gunk, this should break it up for you and remove the tapping. If the lifter is just plain tired and worn out, you are probably looking at a replacement.

You can purchase an entire set of lifters for less than $175. That and the cost of a top end gasket set including a good fel-pro intake plenum gasket, thermostat, oil filter and oil, antifreeze, carb cleaner, and elbow grease can do the whole replacement. If possible, spend the money on a new APS or Hughes replacement plenum and you'll never have to worry again about a leak in the plenum. About $80 at Hughes engine http://www.hughesengines.com/partDet...p?partID=11698

I'd guess that the complete fix without a replacement plenum would easily be less that $300. You would also not have a plenum leak and you would have a fully cleaned throttle body and sensors after you use the carb cleaner to clean it up.

When doing this remember that if you are going to re-use the rocker arms and pushrods they MUST be put back in the same exact location they came out of. Usually most people replace all of the pushrods when they replace the lifters. Depending where you purchase them they can be bought between $3.50 and $7.00 each.

If your budget allows you can also upgrade the rocker arms to roller rockers. Base engines can use 1.7 or 1.6 ration rockers, but if you have any type of performance camshaft already in the engine you'll want to stay with the 1.6 ratio. Hughes engines also sells these http://www.hughesengines.com/partRes...ID=10&pType=RA. Other options are also available through Summit racing and other sites.

One last thing to remember if you are going to re-use the original pushrods and rocker arms, before starting to re-assemble the engine check the original pushrods to be sure they are not bent. Any that are bent need replaced. Also inspect the rocker arms for abnormal wear or cracks. Either of these require that you replace the rocker arm and stock 1.6 ration rocker arms are available and can be purchased as a set or individually.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

HOW MANY MILES ON THE MOTOR? IS IT JUST ONE LIFTER? THE REASON I ASK IS THAT MAYBE YOUR NOT GETTING ENOUGH OIL TO THE TOP END.

to check oil flow to the lifter gally.. remove one vavle cover.. and disconnect the coil plug wire.. and have someone crank the motor..you should see some oil coming up on top through the push rods and to the top of the rockers...

do you have headers on your truck/

also does this sound come only under a load or heavy acceleration or at all times 2K and above?

Marvel Mystery Oil worked on mine. That is great stuff, fixes everything just like duct tape.
