My 2000 Ram 4x4 with the 5.9 has the death flash. I was wondering what I could do to regain some of the power and mileage lost from that without spending the $300+ for a programmer. I have looked through some of the other threads about the Death Flash but couldn't look through them all. Thanks.
You could do the crank position sensor mod. Slotting the bracket to allow it to be advanced. You can get up to 4 degrees of timing advance. If you hear any detonation just retard it till it stops.
How much closer to original will the timing mod put me? Does anyone know exactly what the death flash did (how much it retarded the timing and what else it did)?
Not sure how much they pulled out with the DF, but the MP PCM I believe only advances timing 4degrees more than stock. Fresh brass cap n rotor, new wires and indexing fresh plugs will help if ignition parts are old.
Edit; as Steve mentions the little things do add up
Non flashed stock pcm has about 4 degrees less timing than the MP PCM. The MP PCM compared to a DF pcm, probably around 6-7 degrees total but I am guessing.
