So on my 2000 CC, 4x4 with a 4.7L, one of the metal tranny cooler lines near the tranny has rusted and developed a slow leak. As I look at them from under the truck, one mounts low close to the tranny pan, the other mounts higher. The one that mounts higher is leaking. I looked at the pressure line the dealer had in stock and it looks like what I need, so I don't think it's the return line.

The dealer also gave me one of these as it's a generic tool they had in a drawer somewhere, and they had Mopar ones on the floor:

The guy at the counter said it looks like this one would work for the quick disconnect end. Everything says this tool is for a 3/8 quick disconnect fitting. Does this look correct?

Looks like the right tool. they are kind of a pain to get loose even with the tool however. Put the tool in the end of the fitting and push in with the tool while pulling apart the fitting.

Should I be relieving any pressure in the line by removing the threaded end of the line first? I've been trying to get this "quick" disconnect loose for a while now and it won't budge. Any help is appreciated if this is more than just being a PITA.

 

I wouldn't think there would be enough pressure in the line to make any difference, but it wouldn't hurt to take it loose at the threads and try it. Those quick disconnect fittings can be a real pita. They have a lot of litttle metal "fingers" in the flared end that hold against the rib on the other part of the line. The tool pushes the fingers back so the fitting can be pulled apart. It sometimes is a real bitch and sometimes it comes right apart. Just push the tool in as hard as you can and pull apart the two pieces of line at the same time......

 

What sucks is that the tool feels like it's bottomed out and not going anywhere, and there isn't enough room to get anything in there to help me push it into the fitting. This connection blows. Where's the engineer that approved this?

 

Can you feel the fingers "give" when you push the tool in? There is like 3/4" of tube inside the other piece that has to pull out of the connection. Wiggle it around as much as possible while pulling apart and pushing in with the tool. I agree - these fittings are nowhere near being "quick disconnect". Take as much of the line loose as you can to get you more room to fight with it.

 

The return line has play in the connection tube. This pressure one doesn't seem to budge in the least bit. This friggen thing sucks.

 

Stratocaster1422, any luck? I'm considering replacing the whole 'quick' disconnect fittings altogether with hi psi hose...if I can.
