I have a 98 dodge ram 4x4 standard. Sometimes it doesnt want to go into 2nd gear. If i go to first and take off it will shift smooth. or i will push in the slutch and go back and forth from 3rd to 4th and then it will go into 2nd. it is like something is moving around that shouldnt. thanks for any help....

when your trying to get it to go into 2nd is it grinding? if so, your syncros may be shot.

 

The ability to put it into 3rd and then back into 2nd sounds like syncros to me too. It's like my Jeep's 4-spd with a granny low 1st. The first gear doesn't have a syncro so you have to shift to 2nd then to 1st from a stop sometimes.

 

You might check the oil type/level in it too, just for fun. If it turns out to be that its alot cheaper than having to replace a tranny.
