Default k&n intake question

so for all of you that have one... I HATE THE STOCK AIR BOX SET UP!!!

but i did find that when going through a lot of water i was sucking a good amount into my filter.

has anyone had a problem with the k&N set up sucking in water when going through giant mud pits/puddles? or does the filter do a good job and not let water into the system. i guess what i really want to know is where does the air come into the system and can it be sealed to keep water out.

thanks

dont you hate when your coming out of a hole and your truck starts sputtering for a little while when your going down the road like its going to shut off?

first time it happened to me i thought i really messed something up but i was wondering the same thing about the k&n and i was looking under my hood the other day and where the k&n filter goes i dont think it will do it near as bad

it does go up into the front corner doesnt it?

I'm not at all telling you to buy a new intake system but, the S&B intake that I have on my truck is in a box that looks to be pretty well sealed. I can't comment on just how well, because I have a 2wd that will never get in deep enough mud to test it. The box draws air from the stock fender location, so I would assume it is high enough up not to get water splashed in. Either way I would think that the K&N is doing fine as long as it is not submerged under water. Just a thought, anyway here is a pic of it installed.

yeah that looks pretty well sealed, but it still draws air from the stock location. that was where i was drawing in water from. that and from around the airbox/throttlebody seal area.

it's amazing the difference between a new clean filter and a dirty wet one.. man it works so much better now.

thanks for the pic.

i worry that if i did get a k&n sometime in the future that it draws air from the front of the truck next to the radiator. that would be pretty useless to me off road in the muck. probably easier to make a "snorkle" type thing to another type of intake instead of the stock one.

its probably better than the stock one because the stock one actually runs out into the wheel well thats where the water is coming from

I never had any issues with the K&N setup... whenever I went thru water it was at a slow speed and the waterlevel was always below the bumper so there was plenty of gap for the filter. you could fab up a box of some sort to make sure the bottom 1/2 of the filter stays dry when going thru the wet stuff.

dude, if youre going that deep in the mud you need a snorkel.

silverram99, if you get a chance could you measure the dimmensions of the box that encloses the filter? I want to make my own but cant see how high i can make the box when the hoods closed, because, well... i cant see under the hood with the hood closed

Yeah, I stayed in the dorms this weekend and my toolbox is locked in the schools automotive shop. I'll have to see if I can borrow a tape measure or wait until monday, either way I will do it.
