Default 4x4 linkage

Hey all. You all are a wealth of knowledge on here. So I have a question for you. I went hunting last week and got off the path a bit to where I had to put her in 4wd to get out. Have not had any problems with it up to the week prior. But when I tried to shift her back out the light went out but she stayed engaged. I notice that the shifter has a lot of play in it and thinking that that might be the problem. However I'm not sure how it is supposed to feel as I never paid that much attention to it before. Also, is there some way to adjust it to tighten it up and then see if its any better. I'm going hunting again after thanksgiving and want to be sure that I don't get stuck down there. Thanks in advance for your help.

Sometimes I have to almost rock my truck to get the front axle to disengage. And there is a little play in the shifter, but not a lot.

I did the reverse thing and it didn't work right away. It took about 5 mins of driving around in both directions to get it disengaged. I know the shifter should have a little play but I think mine may have to much. I'll be crawling under it friday and see what I can find.
