looking at an 01 1500 5.9 what to look for
Right now I am looking to buy a used ram gen II 5.9, 4x4. Just wondering what to look out for, major problems. I know dodge isnt the greatest for transmissions my moms intrepid has more weird problems with the tranny than I care to discuss. But anyway What axles come in the half ton, I know the gas milage isnt going to tbe good but I am tired of having no power from the I6 of my grand cherokee. Just new and looking for some help. thanks
Well if you are getting the 1/2 ton, the axles are a Dana 44 up front and a Chrysler 9.25 in the rear. As far as problems, I don't know of any, but I'm sure that someone else may be able to answer your questions. I have the 5.2 and haven't had any problems with it.
Dave Fritz & friends put together a new Ram checklist
that is worth printing out and checking off on a used Ram:

Look over the TSB's and Common problems list:

when you settle on a Ram you like
take it to a trusted transmission shop
and pay them to drop the pan and test the line pressures
i didn't see these..
check the top of the dash for cracks. very common problem, easy to miss.
check inside of rear wheels for leaky seals and smell of 90 wt gear oil
check trans and transfer case for severe leaks. A very small amount of oil at front of drive shaft is pretty normal.
check inside of front wheels for leaky seals on 4wd.
