Silver, you have a flat base right? What is the height of your new K&N, I don't think you mentioned it, I know you said the possible heights but don't think you said the one you have now. I have to go with a smaller filter, I don't know why this 3" won't fit in my truck.
For everyone, are the bottom parts of your base curved in? Mine is like an L shape around the bottom, the part that sits on top of the gasket on top of the TB, doesn't seem like it makes a good seal.

My base is flat I think, but I can't remember for sure. I'll try to get some pics. The paper filter that comes with mine is 12.75" x 2.75". I am running that and think it performs fine. I did fit a K&N that was 2.87" with no issues. I am trying to find a company that makes a 12.75" x 3", but if I don't, I don't care because it is working great the way it is.

I'm running the Mopar Performance Assemebly and it's actually a 1/4 inch rise base. All I have is the paper filter in for now that measures 2.75". That ends upbeing 3" from the throttle body. It's a tight fit and I tied up the wiring harness like ASH to give it a little room. I had to put eveything together halfway on(over the s-bolt, but not over the rest of the throttle body)and then lift the whole unit (including the base) onto the bolt and the throttle body.

I ported my own TB, but did not grind the stub down where you thread in the S-bolt. Even with the extra depth for threading in the S-bolt,I still use a nut to lock it into place. The main reason isthe S-bolt does not seat when it is lined up with the hole in the air filter cover. So I use the nut to lock the bolt into position.
