crickety noise coming from under hood
i've been hearing this cricket sounding noise coming from under my hood for a couple days now. my dad says its just the belts are wet. it has been raining, but i mean after driving for 20mins it still makes the noise. I can't tell exactly where its coming from, but def from under the hood. Anything I should worry about?
Hey - I actually just had that problem.. It would go away after about a half hour though. It sounded like a belt, but i just changed that not to long ago. I found out when the bearing let loose on my idler pulley. Wasn't a big deal to fix, but i needed a new belt and pulley. I think it ended up being about 55 bucks all together and about 20 mins of my time. You can spray some oil on the bearing and if it quiets it, you know whats giving you the squeak. It might just as well be the belt though if it hasn't been changed in a while. Good luck man!
check both the tensioner & idler pulley... the tensioner should move freely to keep belt tenison up and the idler should not be making any noise... you can use a mechanics stethsescope to check it out.
Had that problem also, got a new belt and it didn't help, got a new tensior and it didn't help, neither did new idler pulley. hit that new tensior with some 3 in 1 oil twice amonth and no squeak sounds like brand new. just a year of going crazy hearing the squeak.
The idler pully is behind the fan on the top of the motor. It is just a single pully in the center that the belt runs around between the a/c pump and alternator (on my 5.9 atleast). The idler pulley is on the left of the engine (looking at the front of it) and has a bolt on the front of it that can move up and down to tension the belt. I hope i described it allright lol. Good luck
WOW, interesting, I actually just started having the same noise and looked on this site to see if this was common..........guess so.......I put some oil on it, I guess it didn't like it because now it is chirping at every speed.......ordered new pulley today will be in on Saturday
