I have seen trucks where the pinion shaft nut was not properly torqued form the factory. They can loosen up. It happens.

Grab the drive shaft and see if there is any shuck where the pinion shaft enters the diff case. If there is, remove the drive shaft from the rear diff, and crank down that nut that holds the yoke onto the pinion shaft. Use an air gun if you have access to it. You'll have to look up your specific years torque specs.....

It's a long shot but.............lol.

Good luck.

In my experience, noises can be catagorized: U-joints make a ticking or clunking or thumping sound when they go bad. They also can cause vibrations. A whine generally indicates a bad bearing, though wheel bearings can click when rotated if some of the rollers are shot. Grinding or clunking or "chuffing" usually means a bad gear or one with damaged teeth.

I've also had fuel pumps go bad and they can whine too. But they whine or hum at idle too.

I hate it when my vehicles make a new noise, especially one that comes and goes. Though rabbit to chase sometimes.

If its a faint noise it might just be the electric fuel pump. Or not.
