Dually conversion
Not sure what is possible, so I guess I'll ask to see if anyone's done it or knows.
Toying with the idea of converting my 96 2500 std cab LB with standard single axle over to a dually rig. Ideally, I'd like to eek out a little more weight capacity. Not sure of what can be done with existing parts.
I've heard, though I don't know if its true, that the 1500, 2500 and 3500 all have the same 2000 lbs rated rear axle, and its just a matter of springs making the difference. So the question here is, is it true?
What needs to be changed in order to make the truck a dually? Is it as simple as getting the right rims (front and back) or do the hubs and such need to be changed as well? (Current hubs are 8 lug pattern, if that makes a difference)
The bed isn't an issue as that would most likely be going away in favor of a custom built bed.
Can supply more info as needed.
Thanks in advance.

Haha, that is totally incorrect

1500- Dana 44 front, Crysler 9.25" rear
2500- Dana 60 front, Dana 60 or Dana 70 rear depending on options
3500- Dana 60 front, Dana 80 (duelly) rear
Your best bet would be to get a Dana 80 already set up with the springs still on it. Pretty much bolt in. Also gonna need the extended fenders for the rear though, I imagine they're expensive

thats totally incorrect. lol no its right but most 2500's had the d44, 9.25 unless they were HD's
Thanks guys, I kinda figured that was the case.
I guess I'll be looking in the wrecking yards for any unfortunent Ram 3500 that ended up there and see if they have that rear end.
As far as the fender flares for the box, doesn't really matter as I'll be pulling the box off and custom building a new bed for it.
Also a follow up to that, aside from new rims/tires, would anything need to be changed with the front axle? Or the rest of the drivetrain?
Or will the rearend just bolt in and line up correctly?
