Default What kind of transmission

Hello all, I am a new member and appreciate this forum very much. I would like to know if there is a way I can find out what transmission is in my 1998 Ram 1500 5.9 360 with 79,500 miles that I have had four years. I have not had any problems with the truck except when all the lights on my gages came on and had to replace a speed sensor but among the things I worry about is the transmission. I'd like to know if there is some way to identify the one I have to help gage what to expect from it in the future.
I am now ready to start with some mods on my totally stock vehicle that I am falling in love with but I know so little about engines that it may be a slow process. The truck has been kept garaged and I have never used anything but 93 octane and she seems to run great but I am concerned about the death flash. I cannot locate the PCM on the passengers side on the firewall or a sticker. The only thing shaped like a box is under the steering wheel beneath the dash and a sticker that does not look like a death flash sticker is on it. My VIN Number is: 3B7HC13Z2WG165384. Any help is greatly appreciated. Ken

On my truck when I open the hood all the way up there is a white sticker when I look up while standing in front of the truck in the middle facing the cab . The equivalent is when the hood is closed it would be under the dodge emblem. As far as mods from what I learned in the time I've been reading the forum is to get the truck to start breathing better... cold air intakeor a drop in k&n air filter also a 180 degree thermostat will get the truck to run cooler=more power and then maybe an exhaust. Hope my little input helps

Thank you for reminding me about the need for cold air because add-ons that best supply it will be first priority. I will check closely under the hood for stickers.

You have the 46RE/RH transmission, as for reliability, thats up to you, change fluid/filter, adjust bands, don't abuse it, keep it cool like was stated above, and it will last you a long time. I put 182,000 on my 46RE and just replaced it about a month ago with a performer tranny, but it still shifted and wasnt slipping when I swapped it out, just was getting tired.

Yes, under the hood the following figures/codes were found; STD Duty 4SPD Auto Trans, CC Torque Converter, 3.5 Axel Ratio, Rear Axel Chrysler 9.25, Power Brakes FD - RR. Models Beil 33 XBS. TON 52426408. Spark Plugs RC12LC4 .040 in. gap. Is this transmission different then the 46RE/RH? Any and all comments concerning the above is truely appreciated.

Well chief I also have 98 dodge and I have 141k on mine and I pull trailers and plow snow in the winter and I occasionally rip into it either 4x4ing or at truck pulls. The tranny in mine is still doing great .I just do the required maintance and it just keeps taking the abuse. Don't be scared of tranny damage . It's really not as common as people say .Besides if that's the only prob everyone say's dodge has than I feel all right because ford and chevy have a lot more than that.
