Default '99 Ram 1500 gearing question...

Ok, so.... 2 days ago I purchased a '99 Ram 1500 with the 5.9L motor (4x4) and was wondering what the stock rear end gear ratios are...? I have seen allot of talk throughout the forums of it possibly being 3.55, but was unsure... while towing a camaro (3400lbs) acceleration seemed pretty sluggish all the way up to 60~70mph as well as trying to maintain speed on small~mid size hills on the highway was tough at times... Is this normal? The truck itself seems to be in great condition, but not as peppy as I would expect from such a large V8 (Not towing)... was just wondering that if the stock gears were 3.55, would swaping for something like 4.10's show more performance in these areas?

*edit* Stock tires... 265/75R16's

I've got a SLT 5.9 and I'm pretty sure the gears are stock 3.55, although I think different styles come with different gearing, like sports w/ 4.10's I think. What size tires do you have? If you have 285's then it will be sluggish even without towing. Putting in 4.10's (assuming you have 3.55's) will definitely help you out performance wise, along with your mileage. Consider getting a cold air intake and better flowing muffler/cat for even better performance. I'm sure others will have more to add.

3.55s were stock with 3.92 as an option from the factory. Like ripto said the Off Roads came with 4.10's. 4.10s would be great for towing and 265's I'd say. Gonna cost you to regear front and rear since its impossible to do yourself pretty much.

Yeah, this 4x4 is still completely stock, no after market mods done at all...

Now... was it the sport or the 4x4 that came stock with 4.10's? got 2 conflicting posts....lol, Ripto says Sports, Socha says Off Roads...

To check what your truck actually has, pop the hood and look at the underside of the hood near the front. The factory sticker located there will tell you your gear ratio, type of axle, paint, etc.
