Default Mileage and Exhaust

Hello all:

I have a 2001 Ram 1500 4x4 Extended Cab Long Bed with the 5.9. The truck has no mechanical problems. I am running 265/76/16 tires. I just bought and installed a Hypertech program. I looked down the throttle body and do not have any plenum issues. I also did a fresh oil change and air filter when installing the Hypertech 87 Octane program also. I also had to replace the TPS as well.

So...after all this, on a 305 mile trip from Chicago to Southern Indiana and back up to Lafayette Indiana, I averaged 15.7 MPG. This is found by filling up, topping off in the same manner I always do, and computing miles divided by gallon put in the tank. The 15.7 was right on target with what the overhead computer said was my average as well. I had reset that in Chicago. On the 190 mile trip from Lafayette to the Chicago area where I live, my average was 17.5 MPG. All mileages were cruising between 64 and 67 MPG. If you haven't guessed, I am extremely happy with these numbers. As for the 17.5, as best I can tell, I had a small, 5 mph, rear quartering tailwind. So I know that helped.

My question is: Would putting on dual exhaust from the cat back without a muffler hurt my mileage at all? I am now paranoid to make any further changes because I don't want to mess up the mileage. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Ted

Won't hurt at all, could help though but you probably won't see any gain from it unless your muffler is blocked up now. Go for it, can't hurt

In theory, it should actually help. Many people notice a drop in mileage only because they like the sound and race the truck up more.
