Ticking Noise
Hello,
I have a 2001 Ram offroad edition that recently started making a ticking noise that sounds like it is coming from the front drivers side. It almost sounds like there is a rock or a nail in the tire, but I checked. The noise becomes noticeable at around 40 MPH and still exists when I put the truck in neutral and when it is in 4 wheel drive. I decided to change the U-joint to see if that would take care of it, but no luck. Does anyone have any ideas for me?

Are you low on oil? Sounds like a lifter problem if it's noticeable on the one side of the vehicle. Could be a lifter that is sticking. Try running some Marvel Mystery Oil through the crankcase on your next oil change. That may help free up some sludge/accumulation in the lifter.
How does the brake rotor look? Is there any rust flaking on the backside possibly hitting the brake pads or caliper?
I had that same ticking noise on a Jeep GC a couple years ago. The rotor still looked good, so all I had to do was sand off the rust and the noise went away.

it could also be a bad spark plug wire. they can make a suprisingly loud tick.
which ujoint did you change? you've got one on each of your front wheels and 2 in your rear drive shaft and i think you have at least one in the front drive shaft.

Very good point.
1. The truck is full of oil, and I have recently done an oil change. The truck has about 95K miles on it.
2. The motor runs fine. If it was a problem with a plug wire, would it have an engine miss, or could it still run good and arc at the same time?
3. The rotors don't have any rust on them that is flaking off.
4. I replaced the U-joint on the axle shaft that is on the front drivers side of the truck. The noise is definatly on the drivers side.
I appreciate all of the input. This noise is a pain in the *** to isolate.

You say that you really notice it at 40 mph or above....maybe the tire has a broken belt.
You could try rotating the tires and see if the noise moves to a different corner.
