Default tire causing 4x4 problems?

So I had a tire on my Ram that I punctured through the sidewall. I finally got some cash saved up to get a new tire on. Same size. The other 3 tires were new when the truck was bought this summer. The guy at the store said not to engage the 4x4 until all 4 tires are the same because it will wear on the tranny and cause problems.

Kinda sounds like he just wants to sell a set of tires. Thoughts?

thats only for awd cars and suvs that have it in 4wd all the time they say that if one tire is smaller tread wise that it spins at a diffrent speed than the others and wears down the drivetrain i personally dont think it matters but at work thats what we do ifs a awd we have to tell them they need 4 new tires dont worry about using 4wd because u will be offroad where it wont matter

The tiny bit of difference from the tread is not gonna make a big enough diffrence. Maybe it would if they were MTs and the lugs were 3/4" shorter, but not with a regular street tire. If your using in it a slippery surface it deffenitially wouldn't matter.

Most of the time I can get through the ND weather in just 2wd with my 3 sandbags in back so its actually rare I drop it into 4wd although I figured it would be better to get other peoples opinions just in case

Thanks for the replies

Are your tire differences on the front or back? If they are on the back, do you have the postive trac/anti-spin rear differential. I've been told by numerous people that different hieght tires on the rear with anti-spin will cause excessive wear on the rear end.

The passenger front tire just got replaced, the other 3 were from this summer and have less than 2,500 miles on them.

If the tires are all the same size then I wouldn't worry about it. Besides with only 2500 miles, I would still consider the other three tires "new" also.

I agree no prob with the new tire. When it comes to AWD cars tire sizes can cause problems. The only ones I can talk about with authority is Subaru. But the problem woth those lies with tire height and wheel size affecting the electronic tourque spliting program. I could go on but some one would probably hunt me down and shoot me for talking about non Dodge stuff.
