My gauge picks off the line going from the TQ to the coolers. I retained the factory aux cooler and added another large after market cooler in front of the A/C cond. The fluid hits the factory cooler first and then the aux. I by passed the plumbing in the radiator. Pulling a 5K boat in June from Jax Fl to Marathon, Keys, 95 degree, I never saw over 220 stopped in traffic. It stayed around 150 on the road at 65 MPH.
This AM it was 34 here (that would be damn cold for here) 15 Mile trip on flat Interstate 65 MPH it may have gotten up to around 120.

I have a very similar setup as alcedo, and my temps do pretty much what he said. I hate seeing anything over 195.
With a stock setup though (no aux cooler), expect temps around 195-220. I think I read once that the "trans temp" light comes on at 245.

It also depends a lot on where you put the sending unit. If it's in the pan, you will see much cooler temps. If in the diag port, higher temps. And if in the pressure line leaving the trans on route to the cooler, probably the hotest readings. I use an AutoMeter Z-Series 2640 guage that has a range from 100-250. It is a half sweep elecrical gauge (versus mechanical). I picked it because it most resembles the stock gauges in color and design. My sending unit is in the diag port on the side of the transmission.

Usually below 180. I would say on average, my temps are in the 155-165 range. On hot summer days when I am towing a heavy load, I might see 195-205. But I am running a heavy duty aux trans cooler too, so that is why my temps are cooler then average. Before I installed the cooler and had just the stock set-up, my average was about 195-210, with temps around 220-230 on hot days when I was towing a heavy load.
