Default Question about lifting my 01 ram

Iwas wanting to put a suspensionlift my truck. The only problem is that my truck is a 2001 1500Sport with the Off-Road package anda lot of kitsi've found wont work onOff-Road editions. I was wondering if you guys could suggest some options for me? I'm looking for a 3" lift i think.

i waslooking at these two kits from summit:

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...p;autoview=sku

One question though, will these actually give me a 3" (or 2.5" respectfully) since its an Off-Road edition and to my understanding already a little taller thananormal Ram? And is the extra 1/2" so noticeable that it would be worth the extra $200?

Any suggestions or help would be nice as i know almost nothing about lifting a truck now. thanks!

I think the off-road pkg is actually 2" over the regular 4x4 pkg. Just different springs and blocks. So therefore, you can use most lifts, but the actual lift will be 2" less than the advertised lift. Don't quote me on this though.

Ya, I think your right. So for example, if you by 3" coils, and put them on your truck, you would only be 1" taller then it is today since your current coils are 2" taller then a normal 1500. So decide how much lift you want over what you have today, and buy a lift that is that plus 2" (ex, if you want 3 inches taller then what you are today, buy a 5" lift).

if he did 3inch coil spacers that would lift it a true 3 inches from what it is now, right? then AAL in the rear, that would be 3 all around.....

Yes, if he can find a coil spacer that works with his "off-road" package, then putting that on top of his current coils would give him 3" of lift over what he has today (or 5" of lift over a stock 1500). Problem is, I think you will need new control arms since his are the same as a stock Ram, and 5" of lift is way to much for stock control arms. I think this is why most coil spacers say they are not for "off-road" edition Rams because you can not install them by themselves.

this may be a dumb question, but if i put a 2-3" body lift on it would i need to change out anything else like the lower control arms, or would it just be fine?

Nope, that would allow you to leave your stock suspension the way it is.

see now this is where these forums get people into trouble! after doin research on here and listening to alot of ideas and reading back on old threads i went and orderd 2" spacers for my offroad ram 01 and i dont recall any one saying anything about control arms. i know that the shocks are cutting it close but they will be on there way soon. Silver- i respect your answers you seem to always know what the real truth is . . . are control arms needed for 2 inch spacers and can they be extended down the line for even bigger lift?

Well, on a stock regular Ram (not off-road), the rule of thumb is usually 2" spacers/coils are fine, and even 3" spacers/coils are fine with the stock control arms (i.e no more then 3" of total lift). Anything over 3" usually requires or comes with new control arms (if it's a kit from a good manufacturer). However, I want to say that Shott is/was running 2" spacer on top of 2" coils (4" total) on stock control arms for awhile, but I think you should PM him on that, or maybe he will jump in here. But, it is possible 4" would be fine. I can't say for sure on that.

So if you have an off-road Ram, you are already lifted 2". Assuming that the control arms are the same on an off-road edition as they are on a regular Ram, then adding 2" spacer would give you 4" of lift total. I would think you would need new control arms at that point. Maybe some other off-road owners will chime in here.
