Default getting Chrysler to pay for repainting pre-1997 Rams

not my website
and I have not
gone through this proceedure
...just posting this for other Ram owner's info:

http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Flats/6183/main.html

in a nutshell
some pre-1997 Rams were painted with a primer that was defective
and at least some owners have gotten Chrysler to pay for a repaint
long after the warranty period.

There is more discussion of this at:

i certiantly know my truck is a victem of that.i was wondering what caused the pealing of the paint in certian spots of my truck, and i asked my paint guy, he said without hesitation, ****ty primer from the factory.

Now, there is no warranty passed to me whatsoever from the previous owner, does that mean i am still entitled to this?

this is BS. once the warranty is over, the car is yours and yours only. why do people think the company is responsible for peeling paint years, sometimes decades, after the car was made?

even if they used an inferior primer... they are only liable for the duration of the warranty they offer.
if i bought a new dodge, and 5 years later-the day after the warranty is up- the entire vehicle falls apart in my driveway....well, thats just bad luck. no reason to bitch and moan to chrysler, as they upheld their part of the warranty agreement. people expect everything to last forever, and they want everything handed to them. suck it up. if the paint is peeling on your chrylser 10 years after it was made, either a) realize that a cosmetic coating on the exterior of a vehicle subjected to varying weather conditions and temperatures isnt going to last forever, or b) dont buy another chrysler.

I agree rad,
i have owned my 01 now for just over 5 years and the power steering pressure line just went south and i just replaced it.My ol man saidit shouldnt have gone that soon, well it got 5 years out of it and 61k miles i think it was a good period of time for it to go.But paint wise the roof on my truck wore off in the middle so i had it redone and now the hood was doing the same so now i got a buddy right now reshooting the entire nose i`ll buff out the doors so they match and im happy. The elements destroy even the best paint jobs. Rock chips, tar, salt, sand,UV rays etc you know what i mean.I never had a complaint about Chryslers products and they even replaced the parts on my a/c unit this year i just had to pay for the labor and that was way after warranty was up at 55k miles. This truck was our 3rd chrysler product and my 1st as a truck and i cant be happier with it then i am.Next is a magnum R/T but for now not having any payments sure feels pretty good lol.....

thanks
pat

I had a 92 Dakota that the paint peeled off the hood and the roof due to the defective primer. My dealer repainted the hood and the roof even after the warranty was out as well as after hail damage had been done. I didn't really have to fight them but just used a little persuasion. Told the manager that it just didn't look good for a 6 year old truck to be driving around with half it's paint coming off. I was friendly and just told him I wasn't making threats but if people asked me what happened, I told them the truth. Word of mouth advertising works both ways, good or bad!! He was smart enough to know that. Some other dealers might not be. They didn't fix the hail damage, I signed a waver that the hail damage was there and that I new it wasn't being fixed. I didn't care at that point because I was justusing the truck for hunting andgoing back and forth to work.I just wanted the paint job to look decent. I sold the truck to a co-worker about 6 months later and got my new QC. It never hurts to ask, sometimes it works. Jeff.

i agree 100%. it certainly never hurts to ask. some dealers are more than willing to work with you. but some people EXPECT companies to fix things that go wrong YEARS after the warranty is up.

i hope the lawyers filing a class action lawsuit against chrysler-for paint going bad 10 years after the vehicles are made-are told to shove it up their a$$es.

I know that back inthe late 80's early 90's,my dad had a Dakota with peeling paint, OUT of warranty. He complained and recieved a settlement check from Dodge. Never did repaint it though...

I can see the point that after the warranty is over, it's over. But that applies to normal wear and tear and the companies' expectation of the life of certain parts. However, if the company puts inferior parts or makes a mistake (i.e. bad primer) that effects the mass majority of their product, then that is a risk they were willing to take by not sucking it up from the start and fixing the mistake, OR it may be because the company had a bad supplier. The easiest way to know this is true is by a company being willing to fix the mistake years after a warranty has gone. It usually meanseither the company knewit was bad, or there was a bad supplier.A lot of time the company will do the fix on their own tab (great way to keep customers happy), or there will be compensation to the company from the supplier. If none of that happens, they'd tell you where to get off.
