4WD making wierd noise and clunks
New to the forum and don't know much about 4WD except it works pretty well. Anyways i have a 2000QuadCabRam 4x4.Record snow in ABQ NM and was going skiing this morning. Turned on to a section of rode that felt would be more comofortable in 4WD. Went into 4H fine drove about8 miles around 55mph,and all of a sudden loud clunks coming from it sounds like right under the front seat. Put it in 2WD and it drives fine. The clunk sounds like something is broken. Any ideas on what it may be? Or, is there a risk of damaging something if I drive it in 2WD until I can get someone to look at it.Haven't had any problems with 4WD up till know. I only have about 65K miles onit and don't thrash in4wd. I'm bummed as this could be a second big repair in two years.Didn't make it to the steeps I chickened out as i didn't want to get stuck somewhere on New Years Eve....

Your double cardan joint in the front drive shaft may be bad. It has a center ball bearing that goes dry. It makes a God awful sound. Like metal rubbing with a deep squealing sound. If it's fairly loud, and gets faster as the vehicle speeds up, then I would look there. You can also hear it in 2wd if the CAD does not fully disengage.
You can drive it till you get it fixed. The noise might make ya go crazy.....LOL
Good luck with your ride.

It makes the sound all the time in 4WD. And is fairly pattern like and has a sequence if that makes sense. DieselDemon it does not sound like what you are explaining, no squealing just a fairly rhythmic clunk.

Possibly your CAD is not fully engaging. Make sure it's in 2-Hi and disconnect the vacuum lines on the CAD and then shift it in to 4-Hi. If no clunk, you know everything between your hand and the front diff is working fine and then it's from the diff to the wheels you have to look into. (Put it back in to 2-Hi and reconnect the vacuum lines.)
Hi Aubrey,
Excuse me nietivity(sp). I want to do what you recommend as I am a DIYer as much as possible and i an fairly embarassed thatI do not know what you are talking about. Where is the CAD and I can probably figure out the vaccuum line part?
Thanks, Robert
