death flash, 1 out of 100+
i keep seeing everyone calling the software update lable the death flash sign. this was true once years ago. that has since been reversed with other flashes. what would you due if you had a check engine light on and every part in the system for that code and it just kept comming back. that is what some of these flashes fixed. like the ability for some aftermarket scan tools would not talk to the engine controlers., there was a flash that fixed that. yes there was a flash that did retard timing badly, after chrysler found that was hurting more than helping it was reversed in later flashes. this is why the part number ending letter will change from ab-ac or all the was up to ai-ak. on and on. if a truck seems too have less power than you think it could be anything, dont blame a flash, find the problem. then mods. my truck is like this, after chasing a lack of power and a light ping which turned severe. i found very bad compression in 6 of 8 cyls. which only affected power when pulling a trailer or crusing an od, tcc locked. it pushed snow last year fine, this year it would barely cruise on highway w/ the blade on. you have to remember, most of these trucks were designed to push pull and haul which they do best. you want a race truck, then get a 2wd half ton, 5.9 r/t dakota or a srt-10 these are the best choices too hall ***. i dont mean to get anyone upset. i am here for a lot of the aftermarket mods that people have found too work. i have dealt with the factory side of dodge for 12 years, so everything in my truck is mopar with the exception of things i would or have used in my chevelle.this is why i built a dodge because i know how good they are even though i mostly see the worst of them.

johnalm - you pin pointed low compression in your truck. I have seen low compressionin other postings here. Did you go further to find out what caused it - rings or valves?110K miles seems low to drive a v8 into submission. Its been some time but I had heard GM tests provedthat engine wear is highly correlated with start up cycles. (start up = zero oil pressure for a few revolutions =high wear). I have not heard of load induced wear but presumably it would exist. The second component ofwear in gasmotorsis that gasoline in the intake chargeattacks the oil film in the cylinders and contaminates the oil. But most gas motors are now computer controlled and runpretty lean andlast a longer than they used to.My last one was running good at175Kwhen I sold it and my current vehicle has 100K on it and is not showingany bad signs. I am wondering what is killing these truck motors in 100K miles.
key with any engine is maintenance. when i got mine it had 86k and i bought it from a friend who got ot from someone he knew. that guys kid beat this truck hard and did not take care of it.the truck doesnt have a lot of milagebut it is 13 years old. i have had these in the shop with 150k + running fine. my old camaro had 200k on it. when i did it overi changed everything in the truck to the way i wanted.the only thing it didnt have was a 360. i built this truck to push snow and pull a trailer. a set of heads or a valve job would have fixed the engine. but if i was going to due thatit only made sence to spend a few more hours and drop in a new mopar performance 360 shortblock with new heads. there is no replacement for displacement.
